I'm about to adopt a beautiful senior boy with diabetes and need to buy a glucometer. There are so many conflicting views out there, cost of strips, etc. Any advice for a newcomer? Thanks!
Hello!
Many of us in the states use Walmart's ReliOn Confirm / Micro. It's a human glucometer, which most of these insulin protocols were written for. Strips at the store at $0.36/strip when you buy the 100 pack.
Here's a shopping list I compiled for new members who choose ReliOn:
1. Meter ($15)
2. Test strips ($35.88 / 100)
3. 26 or 28 gauge lancets ($4)
4. Neosporin / triple antibiotic ointment (Polysporin if CAN) (~$3)
5. Ketone test strips
6. A treat for yourself
A signature with some basic information about your kitty is helpful when posting and helps those of us with bad memories: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/
Once you get home testing, here is the Spreadsheet template most use as well to track and share BG numbers. Just need a Google account and if you need help setting one up, just ask:

And I like to give this to new members; better to be prepared, but I hope you never need it: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/
