My cat, Jewels, has just been diagnosed with diabetes. Has anyone had experience with Glargine? She is responding well with it and the hope is that she will go into remission.

Thanks!

Welcome Jewel!

Yes, we have a whole group of people who use Glargine, which we call Lantus. This is their forum: viewforum.php?f=9 The first thing they will ask you to do is to read the starred stickies just under the line on the top of the page. They also will want you to start testing at home if you want dosing advice.

We have a protocol here that works very well and has gotten hundreds of cats regulated or into remission. We fed wet lo carb food and home test so we know we are giving the right amount of insulin and that it is safe to give it. Here is a great site by a vet explaining why wet lo carb: http://www.catinfo.org and a video that shows how to hometest: Video for hometesting

Keep reading. Here are the FAQs: FAQs And ask lots of questions, do lots of research. We would love to help you help your kitty. This disease has a steep learning curve, but dealing with it is very doable.

if you aren't already following it, you might want to talk to your vet about the Tilly protocol for lantus and levemir (lantus is another name for glargine). you'll find it linked in the stickies on the lantus forum linked earlier for you. well over a 100 cats in the group reached remission in a relatively short time following that protocol.

Welcome! We were diagnosed and started Lantus a little over a year ago and went into remission 9 months ago (#115 on the OTJ counter I think :) ). Glad you are checking out the Lantus ISG forum, they are wonderful over there and will help get your kitty regulated and maybe even into remission.

Hi,
Perhaps a more respected source of the (same) protocol for your vet is from the University of Queensland, Centre for Companion Animal Health:
http://www.uq.edu.au/ccah/index.html?page=41544
Tilly's owner and the UoQ vet were co-author's of the paper which goes into more detail on findings and is what i pointed the vet to:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19592286
Hope all goes well -- remission is likely if you can get the vet to follow the protocol.

Jake was diagnosed with diabetes in July of 2009. He was started on PZI (animal insulin), but after about two or three months he was switched to Lantus (human insulin) because the PZI was not working for him. He was on Lantus from October of 2009 until April 29, 2010 which was his last insulin injection. He is almost 19 now and has been in diabetic remission officially since May 13, 2010 since we always give it a two-week trial to make sure it is the "real thing." So it has been just over 8 months now - all paws, fingers, and toes crossed!

Thank you all for the info and the links. We have increased Jewels' doses and her numbers are staying higher. (I just increased her to 1.6U tonite.) My vet is looking into the Somogyi effect. I am hoping that this is not the cause since we may have to consider changing to another insulin other than glargine.

Somogyi, or rebound, is not a reason to change insulins. It just means the body is responding to steep or fast drops by releasing sugars from the liver. Dose adjustments are often needed, but not a switch in insulin - especially since the other insulins tend to be less gentle.

What syringes are you using to measure 1.6u? Or is that just a "fat 1.5u"? You are shooting twice a day?
