Girlie update after wet food switch

So for those of u who were folling me before
My cat girlie was uncontrolled high 600s getting 6unuts of pzi.

I reduced her to 2 units and her sugars were in the 300 to 425 range.

I then switch her to fancy feast vlassic and her sugars have not changed . She is so hungry all the time and breaking into things to eat foood cats would not normally like.

Im wondering if i should increase her dose or decrease . Maybe she is still getting to much after the wet food transition. Also should i feed her more she gets 3 cans of fancy feast per day
 
It is really hard to give advice without a history of doses and levels. Were the 300/425 at shot time? Do you have any midcyle numbers - in the 5-7 hour after the shot? It is possible that she drops low midcycle and bounces back up. Glad she is doing better at 2 units than 6 units.

Can I help you set up a spreadsheet to keep your numbers in? It really is a good tool for you, your vet and for us, when you need advice.
 
I g 404 4 hrs post shot this morning. I need to do a 24 hour curve i guess . I have checked her regularly but have not got anything other than 400s lately her before insulin shot 414 .

Imalso very concerned anout her starvation issues . She acts like she has never eaten when we feed and is always looking for food . She is very annoying and is getting on counters steeling things in packages and takes them somewhere private tp open. She got in cabinets and ate a blue berry muffin she must have spent hours trying to get it opened
 
A 24 hour curve isn't necessary. On a given day, getting levels every 2-3 hours is fine.

Cats are literally starving when unregulated. Their bodies aren't using food efficiently. Some people spread out the food onto a plate so it takes longer for the kitty to eat. Others add warm water so it seems like more food. You can divide the food (3 cans of Fancy Feast sound like enough) into several meals so she feels like she is getting more.
 
Sue i will test ever 2 to 3 hours wednesday and post results .

Its wierd bc when i initially dropped her to 2 units she dropped to the low 300s and she wasnon dry food . When i witched her to wet her sugar slight increase . I hope i cam get her regulated soon

Hmmm....
If her blood glucose dropped when you reduced the dose, but subsequently went up a little when you removed the dry food then it's possible that the dose is actually too high. It may be that the blood glucose is dropping lower than the cat is currently comfortable with. (When that happens the cat's body can release stored glucose into the system to raise the blood glucose; it's a protection mechanism. We call it 'bouncing'.).

It's the 'lowering of carb content in the diet' plus the 'slightly elevated numbers' that is ringing a little alarm bell in my head...
I would strongly suggest that you don't increase the dosage without getting more tests to see how the current insulin dose is working.

Are you testing before each insulin shot and also at some other point during the insulin cycle?

And were you feeding high carb dry food, or something lower carb like Young Again, before you switched to the low carb wet?

i was feeding high carb wet food . i am testing her pre shot . i need to do a full curve this week . i usually just test her before shot . i dont always but most of the time i do . on days im home with her i also test her mid day . i stopped recording the numbers bc they werent changing but still do test pretty consisitantly .
 
The Secondary Monitoring Tools in my signature give you a number of observations you can make to evaluate how your cat is doing, in addition to blood glucose.
Measuring food and water intake and output are fairly sensitive to changes in glucose levels. Increases in all of these tend to correlate with high glucose levels.
An unusual increase in just hunger, may be either too high or too low glucose, and warrants a blood test.
Dehydration checks are good when you observe excessive urination, which can indicate high glucose, hyperthyroidism, and/or renal disease - and if the glucose is well controlled while there is still excessive urination, other conditions need to be ruled out.
 
She is doing much better since the drop to 2 units but slightly worse after changing to wet
Blood came vback great . No kidney thyroid disease .

Her feeds are consistant times and amounts mesured . She has been hungry since the diabeties started but lately since losing the carbs her hunger is more maybe her dose is still to high. Wednesday we will know an i will check every 2 hours and pist the results .

Do you mean low carb - like Fancy Feasy classics/pates?

Her numbers aren't awful - much better than the 600s! I guess I would raise the dose a little on a day you can monitor - maybe to 2.25 and see if the numbers go a little lower. That'll give us an idea whether more insulin may improve things.

Where are we on getting a spreadsheet? Do you need help setting it up?
