Our cat, Lily, was diagnosed on Sunday of this week. Her level at the Vet was 300, on Sunday. We weaned her off kibble and currently she's on Friskies pâté. Today was her follow up consultation to learn how to inject, etc. Her level today at Vet was 285.

The Vet wants her on 2 units 2xs per day. She received her first shot at 7pm this evening.

Does this sound too high for a cat at her levels?

Help!

Are you home testing and if so what type of meter are you using...human or pet?

A quick answer is that seems to be too much to start. Glucose levels at the vets can be much higher due to stress

We suggest starting at one unit and increasing slowly, based on your home testing levels. If I were you, I would start testing at home so you can see how the insulin is working.

285 is not terribly high; we suggest new diabetics not get a shoot under 200 at first. And if that number was from the vet, it could be inflated by stress as Mary Ann said.

We plan to begin home testing. From what I read I thought two seemed too high. Since we don't have the monitor yet should I only do one unit in the morning?

I would keep an eye on Lily and see if you notice any unusual changes. Not all kitties show effects if they go low, but many of them become extra hungry, acting like they are starving. If you see this you could give some HC wet food with few drops of karo, honey, syrup and keep watching.

Since you are just starting Lily I would suggest going to 1 unit until you have some test data to see how she is going to respond.

ETA I am sure you read about the hypo kit but just to summarize.

Keep extra test strips on hand in case multiple tests are required. Hypo numbers require frequent testing and you can burn through a lot of strips.

Keep some MC and HC wet food on hand.

Keep honey, karo, maple eyrup, table syrup etc on hand.

The other information about having an ER vet number and the such is all in the link I sent that you have already read. I may be repeating information you have, but I like to make sure it is clear and also if others read your thread. ;)

Just saying welcome to the group. Mary Ann has gotten you started with lots of great information. If this were my cat, I would reduce the dose tomorrow morning. Once you are home testing you can safely increase if necessary. Lily's numbers don't sound like they were that high. You've done some food changes so you should be conservative until data tells you otherwise.

Can I just ask what MC &HC wet food stand for (still learning the accronyms)? ;-)

I will def do 1 unit until I get the meter.

Hey there and welcome to the best place you never wanted to be. You have all ready received some great information and I agree, I would reduce tomorrow morning to 1 unit and see how that dose takes Lilly.

Here is the carb contents of LC, MC, and HC food which you might find helpful.

Low Carb is 1% -10 %
Medium carb 10-17% carbs
High carb food is above 18% usually will have “gravy in the name

Here is the food chart that we use so you can find the corresponding food for MC and HC food.

Thank you Bobbie! This is so helpful.

Hi Jina! Welcome to our forum! I know you've already heard it, so I'll just agree with everyone else on the dose!

Until you get the meter, I would suggest spending some time getting Lily used to the idea of shots. Most of us choose a testing place (on a table, on the couch, on the floor between your legs). I'd select a place, and start taking Lily there a couple times a day. Rub her ears some and then give her a treat. Let her start to associate going there and getting her ears touched with treats. Freeze dried chicken treats work well. That way, she'll be more used to the idea of it when you do start testing!

Great suggestion. Thank you, Rachel.

I'm right here with you. I just gave Manny his first does - but now I am sure it was too high.
His blood sugar has been averaging 400 on the Relion Prime monitor since I found out about his diagnosis (Monday).
Shot #1 in - 2 units. Vet says 2 units 2x/day.

I should have weaned him into this, shouldnt I?

Debbie

Hi Debbie! We usually suggest lower doses to start with...but our vets don't always! If you can get a midcycle test in (around 5 to 7 hours after the shot) that will help us figure out how the dose is working in Manny.

We'd be glad to help you figure it out! You might try starting a separate thread so several people will see your questions. :)

Hi Debbie, our Vet recommended 2 units also but from my readings I knew it was too high. We only did 1 unit this morning. I will be buying the Relion Confirm this weekend to begin home testing.
