I gave my first insulin shot to Tiger tonight. I hope I did it right, because it seemed too easy. I am going to do first BG check tomorrow morning. I hope I can do this. I have been reading a lot of posts here and learning. I hope to start Tiger a SS. I really need to get him to eat, though.

YOU CAN DO IT :thumbup :RAHCAT Bg testing seems scary at first and there is a bit of learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you'll soon be bg testing in less than a minute :-D Be sure to see the hometesting videos and tips: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=287

Remember, alwys test the bg level before giving insulin. Thay way you know the the level is and if it's at a safe enough level for any insulin to be given. The cut off number for newbies is 200. If your cat tests below that, do not give any insulin becuase you do not want to potentially risk a hypo.

Here are the spreadsheet intructions: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50130

These pictures I posted for someone earlier this week will help you to publish your spreadsheet and get the correct URL to use in your signature: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=83496#p897973

A profile of your cat would be helpful, too  http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79123

Good job on the shot:-) I always found it to be much easier than the ear pokes. Did you get a meter for that?
Have you gotten the little guy to eat?

I tried the ear stick this morning and it didn't go well. He was good, though. I tried 4 times and didn't get any blood. I went back and looked at the slide show and video again and will try again tonight, I'm not giving up. No, Tiger is not eating. He went pee last night and I tested for Ketones in the puddle and it showed negative. Not sure about that because the vet said he had Ketones. He goes to vet tomorrow morning to get more fluids. I am going to see if the vet will let me bring home the fluids and give them to him through the weekend. He seems to do better with the fluids, but without the fluids, by the next day he is back to being week. I can't aford to take him to a hospital for the weekend. I have given one of our other cats fluids a couple of years ago so I believe I can do it. They left the IV needle in Tiger so they wouldn't have to put a new one in when he came back. I hope they will let me do it. I hate I don't have any money.

If you absolutely must get blood, you can aim directly for the vein. Be prepared to test quickly and immediately apply direct pressure with tissue or cotton ball, as the bleeding can be profuse and you'll want it to stop so it doesn't form a big bruise or scab (why we don't normally aim for the vein).
