Gauge of needle

I was wondering which gauge of needle on the U100 syringes most of you prefer. Is there a problem is too small? Like not penetrating the fat layer. They were out of my usual gauge, so was wondering for future buying. Thanks in advance!

I used 31 gauge for Squeaker and it worked fine. I'm not sure what you mean by "Not penetrating the fat layer." Insulin is injected just under the surface of the skin and not through the layers of tissue below the skin.

Lynn, I have heard of people having issues with some of the shorter length needles, but the smaller gauge shouldn't give you any problems at all. I use the 29 gauge, ½" needles myself.

Thank you, I am not sure about that info either Anita, something I read on the internet. I should be fine with the 30 gauge needles. Thanks Anita and Joan!

I liked 30 gauge needles as they were fairly thin yet didn't bend as easily as 31 and higher needles ... and I bent a number of the finer needles and wounded myself in the process.

Yep, those 31 gauge sure can bend easily; I especially had trouble with the 1/2" bending on me @ that gauge. But then I had trouble with the 1/2" length in general, mostly because Bat-Bat is somewhat thin-skinned & has "tight" skin, too. (Ha, goes with her uptight personality!) Found out early on that it's virtually impossible to tent-shoot her. So I ended up going with 8mm needles (5/16") that are 31 gauge. I've been able to "bunch up" her skin, part the fur & get a good shot in that way, & the shorter length helps keep that finer gauge needle from bending. Took me some trial & error (including fur-shots) to find what worked best for her. (Nothing easy about this little bugger!) ECID!

I use the same as Robin which is the 3/10 ml/cc (capacity), 31 gauge & 5/16" length. That is what is on the box. It works for us. I had it bend once when I was injecting it into the insulin bottle but that's all. You want to make sure that you don't get it into the muscle but rather just under the skin. Merlin doesn't even notice them.
