This isnt necessarily diabetes related. But I thought you guys could give me some advice. Garland is still camped out in our master closet area. Connick my other kitty is starting to act kind of depressed. I got both cats on the same day 12 years ago. They have been best friends ever since. They sleep together, they cuddle, they play... Garland was in the vet 7 days, and has been home for 4. Since coming home Connick wont go near her. If he sees her he hisses at her?? I guess she still smells like vet? Im not sure. But now he wont come out hardly from under the bed. Not even to come cuddle with me.. Is he just a little sad, or should I be more worried?

And one more quick question about Garland... She still has a ton of ketones according to the strip test. Is that normal after DKA? Will it take time for them to go away or should they already be gone?

What level are they at on the strip? I am not sure what advice has been given already on the dose, but after going through DKA, the standard start low go slow approach in dosing doesn't really apply. You need a dose where you aren't seeing a high amount of ketones. I see right now you are giving 1u and still staying in the 300s. Is this what the ER vet suggested to do? I personally would have started with 2u after that ER trip, and wouldn't do less than 1.5u right now - especially with a high level of ketones. You can worry about the dose possibly causing rebound later, but right now you need to make sure she has enough insulin to not cause that level of ketones.

As for your other cat feeling really off.... You can always try a dot of vanilla extract on both of their noses so they don't smell the ER smells. All they will smell is the vanilla. It is a really good technique for introducing new cats too.

Hi Violet! don't worry about the smell thing, it will go away ..... the ketones are measuring out at what? It is not good that she has ketones and it could mean that she isn't getting enough insulin. She is on Lantus? Post there and tell them what the ketone strip says and then come back here and tell us. The problem is it is very easy to slip back into DKA, we don't want that.

In case Violet doesn't post back here, this is the link to her condo on the Lantus board. We're encouraging her to get Garland to the ER. Large amounts of ketones can't be effectively managed at home. It also appears that Garland's insulin dose is too low. According to Violet, the vet's did not change Garland's dose from what he's been getting since March. Regardless, the ketones need to be more aggressively managed than what any of us are capable of doing at home.
