Happy Tuesday everyone!!! I thought I would come and give you guys a Garland update. I cant thank everyone enough for all you have done to help us! I was very blessed to find this board. Thank you again!

After 7 days in the ER, a bad episode of DKA and FHL, Garland is on day 10 at home. She has a feeding tube and I feed her every 3-4 hours about 30cc of recovery.

Last week we found out she was NEGATIVE for ketones! yay! Then, around day 8 at home I started noticing some improvements. She walked for the first time over the weekend!! Yay!! Now she is starting to notice how shabby she looks LOL Shes started to try to clean herself up a bit  She is much more alert and I am starting to see glimpses of her personality again. ( she growled at the kids like she used to) She still doesnt move around a lot. I think she still feels very weak and a bit nauseous. She likes to curl up in the corner of the closet and rest. But at night, I bring her out in the living room for some new scenery. She wanted to go outside and feel the warmth a few times too. Shes no where near out of the woods yet, but she is on the path to getting healthy again! She even seems interested in drinking water on her own (but hasnt done it yet)

Oh, and poor Connick (my other kitty) still hisses at her when he sees her. Im hoping he starts snuggling w his BFF again soon. Im sad he wont go near her..she must still smell funny?

Her BS is still pretty high. Staying in the 300 range. We have upped her dose from 1u 2x a day to 2.5u 2x a day. I havent seen it help much yet. Those numbers are refusing to go down for some reason... She has thrown up a few times, but I have noticed she seems to do it when I try to feed her more than 30cc in one sitting. I think she has a small tummy. Her current meds are: pepcid, potassium gel, and metoclopramide. We are filling an Rx today for some anti nausua meds. (ondansetron)

I think thats it for now! Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart. Its because of you that shes still here with me cat_pet_icon

more alert and wanting to grooming herself sounds good, and getting to go outside that's nice

YOU are doing a good work with her!

What a great report to read! Glad to hear garland is feeling better and even starting to look better .. you know they are feeling good when they start bathing more and more .. I'm sure she still has a little vet smell to her .. have you tried taking a t shirt of yours and rubbing her down with it? I was told to do that on my girls when they come home from the vets, they hiss at each other for weeks ... You are doing great!!

Re: GARLAND UPDATE: Tuesday 8/23

Violet-- you have come sooooo far. This is an amazing story and you will inspire other new, overwhelmed diabetic cat parents. I'm glad to hear Garland is healing. She probably does smell funny, both from the long stay at the vet,and the lack of cleaning herself from feeling so crummy. Once she feels well enough to give herself a few good baths, Connick may feel more comfortable around her.

Garland took her first bite of food tonight!!!!! Its been 24 days since her last self feed :) It was only a couple of bites, but we are on the road to recovery!! She is also moving around a lot now, and scratching the carpet again, meowing and even swatting at me when I try to get her BS. My baby is getting back to herself!! Thanks to all!!!! Its because of you she was given this chance to fight!! Thank you!

:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT That's wonderful news! wow, 24 days. This must be a relief for you. Just think of how easy managing the diabetes alone will be compared to all you've been dealing with trying to pull Garland back from DKA. I'm sure you could use a fancy drink, or at least some chocolate! drinking09

Thank you guys!! Im super excited she ate her first food  Im still tube feeding her every 3-4 hours, but now Im setting out a very small amount of food for her to try to get used to eating again on her own. (trying not to rush or push her too hard) Shes getting her energy back and Im seeing glimpses of her alpha female personality again. Shes annoyed with me for keeping her closed off and the ear pricks. She actually "huffed/puffed" at me when I wouldnt let her go under the bed  Everyday she gets a little better

Dearest Violet, and, of course, you too, most amazing Garland,

Thank you for this incredibly happy and positive update, Violet! Go Garland!!! Go Violet!!! You two are the dream team!!!

Please keep us updated when you can, okay? And, please know my hopeful, healing thoughts and prayers continue for your amazing Garland and her incredible Mom.
