My DH accidentally left the back door open for a few minutes while I was at the grocery store. He closed it not knowing both cats had snuck out. When I got home from the store I noticed Connick in the backyard but have yet to find Garland. Can everyone pray for her safe return home? Shes been outside an hour so far....I'm worried sick

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Tried the food thing. An hour is a long time to be lost. She may be far away by now. I'm soo worried :( and now it just started to sprinkle

Does Garland go outside on a regular basis and does she have a "favorite" spot where she hangs out? We used to "lose" Stu frequently, only to find him tucked into a dense bush about 10 feet from the back door. You should alert your neighbors and post signs. Does Garland have any ID? (collar; vaccination tag?)
If she isn't used to going outside, I would suggest walking around your yard and neighborhood, calling softly (you don't want to spook her), and talking in a normal tone among yourselves. She may have been frightened by something and hearing you behaving normally might encourage her to show herself. I am praying that she will be home soon.

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

I felt complete terror when I read your Subject line. I have experienced a 'lost' cat and have never , ever gotten over it.

But it has only been a short time. Just stay out and keep calling and looking. I hope Garland comes home soon.
As he ever been out before like this?

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Cats don't usually go very far. She may be scared and hiding in a bush. Especially until any commotion quiets down.

I had a bunch of people looking for my lost escaped cat Buddy, once, and as soon as they all went back in the house, I heard Buddy softly meowing from a bush. He was right in front of the house the whole time. Another time, the same cat, after all the people looking for him (except me) finally went inside, I got out a sleeping bag and laid in it in the quiet of the night, and very soon my cat was there wanting to curl up with me.

Also, many times, I have Freaked Out and become Very Frantic when I couldn't find J.D., and he would be found somewhere in the house, in the basement or in a closet, or just plain ignoring me.

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Thanks everyone . This is the third time Garland has been lost. The first time here at this house though. The very first time was at an apartment complex, she was gone 4 days. I found her under a car in the parking lot. The 2nd time she was lost for 2 hours, we found her 7 houses down and across the street. She sneaks out so quickly. I'm so worried. What if she doesn't know which house is ours? She's never been outside farther than the front porch. What really worries me is she got out the backyard , so she must've gone under the fence. I have 4 houses that line my backyard fence. She could be anywhere. She could be in a completely different neighborhood bc of the fences... :( :( I'm seriously having a panic attack

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

This has happened to me once with Milo, he got out in our back yard, and went under the fence into the neighbors, of course I panicked and was screaming his name etc.. which scared him worse I'm sure.. then I sat in the back yard on a lawn chair and then like 45 min later I saw him running out of the neighbors bush, under the fence and right into the back door! I think cats have a good sense of their surroundings, and my prayer for you is that he will be home soon!

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Try to be calm, Violet. I know it's hard to do, but it will make it easier to search thoroughly. What kind of neighborhood do you live in (suburb? small town? city?) Do you know your neighbors? What kind of fences are those and how would she get under them? I would start in your own yard and look carefully in any place that a kitty could crouch. Dyana has a good point: have you looked in all of the places inside your house that she might have gotten into?

Thinking good thoughts that Garland will show up soon.

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

i too have had cats escape and they always come back. one time i spent probably an hour searching my 1 bedroom apartment, sure TC was there but not finding here (and she was one of those cats that got into everything) and eventually i found her on the top edge of an open bedroom door, laughing at me.

Garland may even still be in your house or yard, perhaps even enjoying watching the excitement of her beans. i think quiet calling is a great idea, not everyone, just you, so it doesn't scare her. we're sending all the "come home" vibes we can to Garland!

I am an 'oldish-timer' ...not here as often anymore but do lurk around and try to keep up with some of the kitties. I have followed Garlands story. I know how horrible this feeling is having had my civvie escape a few times. The last time he was gone several days. We live near a nature preserve with greenbelt all around and I just knew he was gone. I worried like you that he would not know how to find his way home. It was pouring and there would be no scent to track. he was never outside.
Aside from the obvious calling in all directions, shaking food, etc.. Some suggestions I got and wanted to share:
place her litter box on the porch, or split the litter into 2 and put one in front and one in back if you think she may have gone that direction. I also left the garage door up slightly with lights on and with his food bowls in there. Anything to give her a scent of home.
Mine got out just before violent storm and had never even been in rain before. After 3 days I was of course thinking the worst. But then in the middle of the night he came in through the open garage door and meowed at the back door to come in. I so wanted to know his story, but alas never will.
I agree that she is likely very close by.

Thinking of you and sending 'coming home' vibes to garland.
Hang in there and please keep us posted.

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Oh no Violet. I can only imagine your panick. I would knock on all your close neighbors doors and let them know she's diabetic and needs medicine and to keep an eye out. Sending hugs.

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

I've gone up and down both sides of the street a hundred times and searched through all the bushes at my house and a few of my neighbors. I called the ones I know to have them check their yards. No luck yet :( :( I set food out for her in the front and back. There are dogs that live in some of my neighbors yards, I really hope she stays out of them .... Her shot time is in 6 minutes... I'm so worried I won't find her. I don't even have a computer right now to make a flyer. And I'm trying so hard to not be mad at DH.....I can't believe he left that door open and didn't notice BOTH cats in the yard when he closed it....

Thank you all for your stories .. It gives me hope

Oh, some asked about my neighborhood earlier. I live in a basic cookie cutter suburb. Lines of houses fence to fence

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Garland come home!!!

Violet...have you checked EVERYWHERE in the house? Closets, under beds, everywhere? This happened to me once and I had all our neighbors out looking for GA Max. While they did that, I searched the house again and he had gotten into a linen closet and the door closed behind him and he couldn't get out.....and didn't meow. Cats can hide in alot of places in the house. Just trying to think if there is any way that she maybe got scared and popped back into the house and is in there somewhere.

please come home Garland....PLEASE!!!!!

Re: Prayers needed! Garland is lost

Thinking of you! Worry about shot time later- # one goal is to find Garland... Come home Garland!!! Your beans who love you are worried!

I know how worried sick you are. It has happened to me twice. Once my sasha (GA) got out and I drove around the house shaking her food cannister. Guess that was the only good thing dry food is good for.

Another time my mom's cat got out when my father went to tell kids outside to be quiet. No one realized he was missing until the next day and the house was searched upside down. he was eventually found on a neighbours balcony
a few doors down. The neighbours were afraid to call the SPCA as he would have been killed.

What kind of animal control do you have in your area? I would get myself down there as soon as you could with a picture of Garland if she does not have a chip or collar. So in case she is found and brought in, they will have something to match to. I remember going to check the cages at our local SPCA and of course I could not stop sobbing. They thought I was nuts.

I pray that Garland has the same appy ending and get back home safely to you.

GARLAND IS HOME!!!! dancing_cat

My neighbor ( 4 houses down) went to check his backyard for me and when he went out there she ran. She came straight home. I heard pawing at the front door and went to open it, she came flying inside with her tail all puffy. Lol She must have had a fun adventure. Me on the other hand feel like I just aged 10 years. My neighbor said she squeezed under the fence.

Thank you everyone for your prayers. I know this board has power for our kitties. I don't know what I would have done if she had been lost for good.

She was gone for 3.5 hours. Her shot was 25 minutes late. PMPS 341

I AM SOOO HAPPY SHE'S HOME SAFE!!!!!! :-D
