Gandalf update

Sorry it's been a while since I posted an update since his seizure.

He hadn't been doing very well. The seizure obviously made his arthritis worse and he just laid around, was grumpy whenever I had to pick him up. Just generally in a bad mood all the time. He stopped eating well so I started giving him Pepcid AC again since his amylase was elevated on his bloodwork a few days after the seizure. That value was elevated when he was first diagnosed with pancreatitis via fPLI test in '09. He began eating better a couple days later, so I am continuing the Pepcid at least SID if not BID every day.

Then he had his second acupuncture treatment last Thursday since the seizure. He'd had one the week after the seizure, but I didn't notice much difference. After this latest treatment he was remarkably better that same day already and has remained less grumpy and more like himself since, more affectionate and vocal. We are doing another treatment this week, 1 week following the last. That's actually because of a change the acu vet has to make in our schedule, but I think it's an excellent idea.

She also suggested we try Gabapentin pain & seizure med, which has been discussed as successful for some arthritic cats here on the board. It's necessary to get it compounded though as they no longer make 100mg tablets for people and cats need very little. I don't have it yet because that takes a little while, but since he is doing better I will at least have it as a back-up. It can cause drowsiness, but I expect him to act about the same as he does on Buprenorphine or Torbugesic, although the latter we will not be trying again, because he vomited up black bile the next morning, probably caused by iron in the Torb. That was very freaky, but at least it wasn't blood.

I have updated his spreadsheet and he is finally doing very well after yet another decrease in his dose. He is now at half what his old optimum dose was. This is not necessarily a sign of better regulation for a geriatric cat with his numerous health issues, but can be a sign of a tumor somewhere. The acu vet spoke with someone familiar with cat seizures at a conference and it is believed that he may have a brain tumor of some sort. Although the possibility of an allergic response to the AB Doxycycline he was on is there, the possibility is much greater that the seizure was caused by a brain tumor.

But he's doing fine for now, so that's what I hope I can continue for him as long as he has.

Glad he did better after the 2nd acupuncture and hope he does even better after the 3rd treatment.
You've done such a great job with him, Vicky. I think of Gandalf often and send him good vibes.
Keep us posted on how he feels once you start the Gabapentin.

Thanks for the update Vicky. Always good to hear about how the Big G is doing. :) So glad the news is better this time and the acupuncture seems to be helping him too. Please try not to dwell on the brain tumor theory since you will just worry yourself to death. Since you haven't seen another one I would lean toward it being a one time occurrence so just try to keep telling yourself that. You are a good Mom to him and like all of us Mom's (and Dads) you just can't help but worry, I know. :(

Hi Vicky-I was actually thinking about you and Gandalf this morning, glad you posted an update a few days ago.
Is all the same? "IF" it is a tumor, they can be silent for a really long time.Sounds like he's doing pretty now-hope you can stay in the present and not project. please give your gorgeous boy a big fat hug from Marci in New york.

Thanks, Pam.

But I haven't posted the latest. He apparently had a nail sheath come off, leaving a very sharp new nail point which got caught in the carpet the other night. I didn't see it till yesterday morning and luckily we had an acu appointment this morning so I didn't need to rush him in.

What he did boggles my mind that an 18 year old cat could get himself in so much trouble. I have berber carpeting with those closed loops of carpet. So he got caught and yanked and yanked until he tore the claw completely loose from the quick, which causes a lot of bleeding. There is blood in different places in the cat room.

I have a wonderful acu vet who is also a part-time ER practitioner so she's comfortable and quick at assessing situations. Right away she knew he had torn the claw off. It was still attached by the skin though and the quick was matted in dried blood and hair. I was privileged to assist her by holding his other paw and a towel over his head to keep him from biting or clawing her, though he tried.

She dripped some local anesthetic over it and in one quick jerk she ripped off what remained of his nail. She bandaged him up well, but he had that flipped off within an hour of getting home. It looks OK. At least it's not bleeding anymore and he walks fine on it.

I don't want to have to do that again for him! He's still doing good otherwise. I got some gabapentin pain med for him for his arthritis, but am not going to use it until I can be home over several days to see how he does with it. He won't eat if he gets too loopy on a med. It's the kind that after a few days they tolerate it better if at first it makes them that way.

Holy Cow! Just when you think what else could possibly happen...
Grandkids are visiting so I am sure Alley is stressed out, they leave tomorrow, so he will again be the sole attention getter. My little civie Gidget threw up on the hardwood floor this morning and I stepped in it and went flying. I laughed so hard I couldn't get up. Luckily I am still in one piece. If not for our sense of humor, we would lose it at times.
So glad Gandalf did not twist and break his leg. He is one tough guy!
Keep up the updates please!
