Gandalf dental report

He did very well! Our AMPS was 219, his pre-dental bloodwork about 2 hours later has it at 230 - how's that for meter variance?
Post dental it was 139, which would have been about +3.
+7 66 and they gave him some Nutrical
+8 143

No extractions and boy, do his canines look better! They were stained with a brown streak, now they are whiter than my teeth. His blood work looks OK, although his BUN and Creatinine are just over high normal, which is good regarding the Creatinine because it is steady now at that above high normal and has been for quite a while. It is my argument to anyone with a cat showing renal insufficiency - start them on low amount of fluids and it should maintain them, as long as there are no other complicating factors like heart disease. A university vet got me started on the fluids for him. I am forever grateful for that.

I had them check BP pre-dental and it was 114/89 and 109/85. That actually seems low, but I'm not sure what a cat's normal BP is supposed to be. I'm pretty sure that was done pre-dental, as that's what I asked them to do. Perhaps vet wrote down what it was during dental only.

My only beef, as it was last year, was that they charged me an exorbitant price for BG checks! I even mentioned this to the vet beforehand, sort of hoping they would cut me a deal. At least his ear isn't all bloody like it was last time. THAT really burned me. For the 3 checks via glucometer the total charge was $43.50, $14.50 EACH!!!!!!

When the total for everything was only $263 and so many here state their dentals are so much more, I guess I shouldn't complain, but when I know how little it truly costs per test, it is an outrage. That is almost 2 months of test strips for me!!!! Yes, I want them to keep him safe, but the results they got are perfectly safe and he only went to 66 because of no food/anesthesia affects. He had .65U dose this AM.

I haven't checked him yet, but I bet he's over 350 tonight, or in the AM at least.

Hey V, that's all fabulous news and i couldn't be happier reading it!! Great BG numbers, good looking BP numbers, no extractions, and although the price for testing is ridiculous, the overall price was excellent.

Did he eat when he got home? Are you planning on giving pain meds?

Thanks for the update - thought about you guys often today. Rock on Gman!!

Yes, he wanted food as soon as we got home. I fed him an ounce of raw mix. He even jumped on to a trunk I have in front of the big window and he laid there and cleaned himself off. I think he peed outside, because his behind was a little wet when I picked him up. I always watch for that when we get home. He'd gone to the box and kind of smelled around, so I was a little worried, but he will go outside and although I didn't see him, I don't know how else his bottom could get wet spots.

I had them shave his belly hair only and am keeping all of it to send off for yarn eventually. I have to get a white pillowcase, as that's how they recommend storing it - NOT in a plastic bag. Apparently clothes moths can eat through plastic and the plastic actually intensifies the odor for them. It's best to store the hair in a cloth bag in the open, where light gets to it - they don't like light.

+12 320 ~ 1.3U

Just about had a heart attack! I gave him his shot without using my micrometer! Ack!! I eyeball the dose and get the plunger at about the right spot anyway, so after the shot, I reset the needle to where I remember putting it (I can remember something for about 30 seconds) and checked it against the micrometer and if anything, it was a little under our 1.3U, so we're good.

Whew!

BTW, did we ever hear back from the member who was going to get a micrometer to help her measure doses???

It always surprises me when they come home from a dental and chow down. I guess the hunger is due to not eating for so long but common sense would tell me that they would not want to eat due to sensitivity after all they had done. Makes me feel better to see them eating though.

Hugs and kisses to the Gamn. Remember that his BG #'s may be lower for the next few hours due to the anesthesia.

Oh yeah, what ever happen to the member who wanted to get the micrometer? Hope she is doing well.

Keep us updated on how he does tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully he's exhausted and will sleep like a baby tonight.

Give him kisses from all of us please.

Nice report, Vicky, alls well it seems.

Yeah, those vet BG tests.. Yikes! My vet started out charging me $18/per and that went up to $20 after about 6 months. When I had him in for a curve (that he hypoed on) they tested him 3 time to conform that he was dropping like a rock, gve him glucose and tested him 3 more times to make sure he was safely coming up. I left after paying them something like $130 for a totally wasted day and useless numbers - well, I guess they did tell m e to drop the dose based on them...

Testing at home saved me about an hour a week, and about $14 (not including gas money) and gives me at least 14 tests versus 1.... THAT'S a no-brainer!

Glad the dental went well. It's always nice to get those over with! Nice to hear he has nice sparkly teeth now.....let's see a big smile Gandalf!

My vet charged the same thing once...$15.00 for a poke. I was floored too.

That was Ruthe and Miss Rugs that was ordering the micrometer. She had actually ordered it so I assume it came. We need to hear from you Ruthe!!
