Hi everyone,

I posted in the OTJ forum as well... Need advice:

Yoshi has been in remission for approx 2 years. He went to the vet today for a cyst on his neck (vet said not infected) and was drinking a lot of water. I just tested him and he’s at 353. I don’t know if this is stress from the vet or an underlying health issue or if he needs insulin again.

He’s going to the vet tomo for bloodwork and urine tests (I booked these prior to taking the blood sugar)

Anyway, I’m freaking out. Is there anything I should be doing until he goes to the vet? I just fed him half can of Ff pate.

Sorry to hear about the elevated BG for Yoshi. I think I would continue to check his BG daily at different times if you can, and record it in the ss so you can track it. Take a deep breath, getting yourself worked up isn't going to do you any good or promote good healthful rest for you. It just may be the vet stress, and by testing you are going to find out. At least you have the knowledge and tools to go forward, in whatever direction. :bighug:
 
Thank you so Much for your kind words. They really help. It’s been so long I forgot the proper term for BG and called it BS.
 
blood sugar or blood glucose, all the same thing..except sometimes in my house a different BS is not unknown. LOL :confused::joyful: Please keep us updated on Yoshi, I will be wondering about him.
 
That elevated number could be vet stress. Did the vet drain the cyst or remove it? If so did the vet provide you with any pain meds? It could be pain that is elevating BG if there was any invasive treatment done. If there is no reason to think Yoshi is having any pain and you get another elevated BG tomorrow, test Yoshi after a 2 hour fast, then feed him and retest him again about 3 hours later. If his pancreas is working his BG will be lower at the 2nd test than the first test. If numbers are still above normal, test periodically for a few days, to determine if he does need a bit of insulin support again. Keep us posted. :)

I’ve said way worse than bs today. But you are right totally the same thing. Bs bg tomato tomato
 
Oh dear! If you are going to the vet again today, you could consider having the vet include a fructosamine test in the bloodwork to see if Yoshi's BG has been running high for the last 2-3 weeks. That would I give you a quick answer on whether this is a slip out of remission or possibly just a temporary issue.
 
Just an FYI, yoshi has a UTI and needs some dental work. All the vet had was Lantus. His numbers are still high, but I know Lantus has a depot that takes a while to kick in.

I miss Prozinc and it's focus on the pretest. I wonder if I could switch vets and insulin or if it's too late since I already started Lantus (day 3). Have any of you ever switched over?

Any advise is appreciated. I have been talking to the nice folks on the lantus forum and they've been great at explaining everything.

You can switch insulin any time you like, but to be honest, while ProZinc is a great insulin for cats, most folks switch from ProZinc to Lantus not the other way around, mostly due to duration or bouncing. ProZinc is NOT dosed based solely on pre-shots and with both ProZinc & Lantus, how low the dose is taking BG is key to making safe dosing decisions.

This same thing happened with our kitty this week. 2 years off of insulin. He was not at the vet, but other than that--same story.

You are not alone!
