I persian breeder friend told me to get a furminator for my cats and the way she described it, it was a middle thing between a comb and a razor. But I have short haird normal cats and certainly don't want to see them bald from the furminator.

So, is it something safe to use and what are the drawbacks?

Well just ask Maui, while she loved the feel of it and I got all excited with all the fur that came off, sadly we were too enthusiastic and by the time I finished, Maui was almost bald!

If you use it in moderation, and don't do what I did, should be fine. It does work great.

I totally LOVE it.... when Oliver arrived, he was full of old dull dry dead hairs and now, he has a gorgeous shiny looking coat. Shadoe looks better too but she is a super groomer so she does not leave me much to comb out.

They are both short hair.

The Furminator is over-rated and over-priced. It doesn't even work well on long haired cats like Gandalf because the tines are so shallow and so close together they cannot get through his double layered hair. Also, I can't press too hard with it because it's painful for his arthritis in his worst matting areas, like his back legs.

I know people love it, but one of my pet peeves is with products which are promoted relentlessly, so the companies get by with charging an exorbitant price. Especially when there are cheaper alternatives - way cheaper.

Try this undercoat rake and your Furminator may just sit in a drawer like mine does: http://www.amazon.com/JW-Pet-Cat-Underc ... B000TZ74KA

FYI, hold it perpendicular to their body, do not rake it across their skin.
And yes, it works great on short-haired cats too! I get piles of hair off my cats, just like they show in the videos of the Furminator. For $6.

Well there are Furmiator a-likes out there. $13 at Wal-Mart the last I looked.

Furminator works great on short hair cats. Actually the only thing I've found that will work on some short hairs.

A Grayhound Comb and aggressive combing is the best thing for long hair cats. I would not use a Furnimator on a long hair but honestly I'm happy with the Grayhound on the long hairs and have not tried the Furminator on a long hair so...].

for short haired cats i mostly use a flea comb to groom them. sometimes i put a rubber dishwashing glove on and rub them from head to tail to remove loose hair.

the kitties of mine who hate the comb love the furminator. i got it pretty cheap on amazon.com. it's basically like a rubber rake with a metal blade and it does a combo of snagging excess hair and chopping it off. shadow my longhaired cat loves the furminator and purrs while i use it but tries to get away when i use a comb.

BTW I don't think the Furminator actually cuts/chops the hair - that is not my experience with it.

http://www.furminator.com/legal/patented-technologies
"The patented FURmiantor deShedding Products were developed to grab and remove undercoat and loose hair quickly and easily, without cutting or damaging the topcoat."

That's the only thing I found on their website. I'm sure one can contact them and ask.

Also from this site:
http://www.vetinfo.com/comparing-furmin ... tools.html
"The Furminator is specially designed to grab the hair of the undercoat without actually cutting the hair."

The furminator is supposed to pull out dead undercoats.

It works fabulously on my double-coated cairns and on my short and long - haired cats. I think it is well worth the price I paid ($30 for the size I got) but I am sure there are cheaper imitations out there that work well. Just make sure not to use it in the same spot too long.

My long-haired cats also need to have their coats combed to prevent mats. It isn't the dead parts of the coat that mat but their fine long coats. The furminator nearly eliminates shedding though.

Angus (medium hair) loved it and it was the only brush or comb he allowed me to use on him. He would let me know when he had had enough. Minou (short hair), who loves just about any brush or comb, hated is. It seems to pull her hair too much.
