Fur Shots

I believe I am getting numerous furshots, which is why my cat's numbers are staying in the high 400's. She is very responsive to the Lantus, but it seems I am missing the mark. How long does it take to get good at this?

Also, what is the different between tight and relaxed Lantus? Thanks.

It took me a week or so, though I still get the occasional fur shot if I am in a rush. Here's the technique I use: I usually target Ninja's sides or upper back -- wherever I can get a grip on the most skin. I pull up A LOT of fur and skin - using the thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger of my LEFT hand - and I pull it up about an inch high, into a big 3-D tent -- then shoot into the lower third of the tent that I have created. If you shoot too high you will get a fur shot, as the needle will come out the back side. And if I try to create the tent with just two fingers, it is often too shallow (so the needle comes out the back).

I also now hesitate before pushing in the plunger (for just a second) which gives me time to assess whether I placed the needle low enough in the tent or not, or if my tent is too shallow. You will get a feel for whether you are in the right place -- and if not, you can withdraw the needle and try lower before you push the plunger in. Ninja doesn't seem to mind.

If the fur does not feel moist near the injection site and your cat's fur does not smell like "old bandaids" (LOL to Rhiannon!) afterward, then you probably got the shot in ok.

I do still have the occasional fur shot, but mostly it is when I am in a hurry, or do not have adequate lighting for the task. Adequate lighting is really important since you have a black cat like mine -- and yours has longer hair, which makes it even harder for you.

I use a Wahl hair trimmers to buzz off Pumbaa's fur on the right and left sides back by his flanks, and that way, I seldom get a fur shot because I can actually see what I am doing. The fur grows back quickly, so I have to buzz him about once a month.

The below photo was taken about a week after buzzing him.

The difference between relaxed and tight regulation? How frequently you test, and how committed you are to following the TR protocol.

I kind of combine the TRP with Start Low/Go Slow and even the Roomp/Rand protocols, and post in the relaxed forum, although I could still post in the tight regulation forum. It's all up to you and what you feel comfortable with. (I'm sure others can give a much better description of the differences, and hope they will.)

Poodle cuts...I like it. I'll have to get much better with the buzzers, though! *LOL*

Thanks for the replies and advice. I think I will get Camille shaved because the long fur is making it difficult to give shots. Last night I got another fur shot, and today I'm supposed to do a curve, so I'm hoping my shot this morning was successful. I'll find out at 0900.

I always feel so guilty when i do a fur shot / mess it up as mostly he's a good boy but i have to do it quickly as now he's feeling better he's not too keen on having it done. But when he us good and i mess it up i feel like ive let him down and feel so guilty.

Your cat is gorgeous! Of course, I'm partial to black cats.

My vet shaved a few different spots on EQ after his diagnosis so I'd have less trouble finding where to shoot. I agree it's an excellent idea! Good luck!
