When I gave Ziggy his shot this morning, it made a funny noise, and sure enough, his fur was wet right by where I had tried to inject him. Should I assume that I totally missed and do it again? He was 509 this morning, so I feel like I shouldn't just do nothing when I know I screwed up!

Generally, we say if a fur shot is suspected, DO NOT re-inject.

You don't know how much insulin may have gotten in and you don't want to over-dose.

I would test in an hour, then another hour. If BG is that high, I would then give
a reduced dose (1/2 normal dose)....and keep testing.

WHAT IS YOUR INSULIN and what is your normal dose, and how often ?

I am not a vet and any statements I give are my opinion only, and not medical advice.

We are using ProZinc. We are still working on getting to a "normal" I tried to give her 2 units this morning.

I haven't replied on your thread before. If you want, give us some details about your kitty and how ProZinc is working. We have a lot of people using it. Have you seen the ProZinc document? Too much for one seating but good info.

Every one here has had a fur shot - even people shooting for years. It is hard to leave them in higher numbers, but is too dangerous to shoot again without knowing how much went in. Better one cycle of higher numbers than a mid cycle in dangerously low numbers.

Ziggy was diagnosed with diabetes in April 2011. But as soon as we switched him to wet food, which he loved anyways, his numbers came right down and we had not given him insulin since May 2011. When we thought to test him, he was always around 60-80 with no insulin. good kitty!

About 10 days ago, he was acting funny, so we tested him, and he was in the 400's! Urg. He was on 1 unit for about a week and his numbers were actually going up. The vet suggested we increase his dose to 2. So we have been oscillating between 1-2 based on how high he tests. I was hoping to monitor a cycle today. I screwed that up. Our schedule was a little shifted because we were out late last night for my husband's birthday, so his PM shot was around midnight, instead of 8pm, like usual.

I tested him at 1+ and it was 508. Maybe i will just monitor and then get him back on schedule at 8pm?

Have you had him checked out for an infection or teeth problems? Sometimes when OTJ kitties throw high numbers, something else is going on.

Has his diet changed to a higher carb food?

He is eating and drinking normally.
He has been eating the same wet food since May - pet smart sophisticat. He had an eye infection a couple weeks ago and it cleared up with antibotic drops.

I don't have stuff for ketone testing. They tested him at the vet on monday and he was ok.

Just tested and ~3+ was 421.

I had a ketone scare last week and am feeling like the official ketone spokesperson: get some strips. I've found them at Walgreens and WalMart in the diabetes area. I caught them early, however, had I not been testing, I could've had a much worse/crazier week than I've had! ER vet told me if it was DKA, it would cost between $2-4000. A bottle of strips about $6. Think of it as insurance!

With the eye infection, and high numbers, it could be a breeding ground for ketones. I test at least 2x/day.
