Frustrated With Kibble Issue....

Hi Everyone:

I've been trying to help others with very basic things that I've learned now too but, I'm having trouble with Morrigan still being a kibble cat.

Here's the deal...I have her on 50/50 canned foods recommended here on the low carb list but, she STILL insists on the kibble and will NOT eat the left out canned foods or much canned food at one sitting (no matter how long I wait her out).

She's currently on Hills m/d kibble and Purina DM kibble and eats about 1/4 cup / day....mainly at night as we try to keep the kibble up while one of us is around during the day (she mainly sleeps from 1 till 8 pm unless she can get outside).

I've tried baking canned foods (I think it's a texture thing) and coating it with FortiFlora (which attracts her normally) but, no go.

I cannot get Young Again Zero nor, Evo up here. They've banned Evo (say discontinued) up here and as a fellow member and I have been pleading with the Young Again people to get a Canadian distributor, they say that they can't as it's too expensive. They aren't kidding! They WILL ship it up here BUT...it's $32 U.S. (Canadian dollar worth so little in U.S. right now) just for the shipping and a 6 lb bag is $54 U.S....then, we get hit with our Canadian taxes AND DUTY! So, that is more than $100 U.S. or likely about $120 U.S. or MORE for a 6 lb bag!!! There's NO way that we can afford that AND...there is no guarantee that she'd eat it even if I could afford it.

So, I'm frustrated as her numbers are up when she eats kibble through the night and won't look at eating the left out canned foods. She just doesn't eat if we don't give her the kibble.

We tried for 2 days to keep putting out 1 Tbsp at a time of the canned food every 2 hours or so and refusing to give her the kibble. She'd lick it then walk away and we ran into BIG trouble after 2 days of doing this. She wasn't urinating or defecating so, we phoned the vet, who alarmed, told us to put the kibble back out! We did and it took 2 days to get her back on track with everything.

She now eats, maybe...3 to 5 ozs per day of the canned low carb foods (will NOT look at Fancy Feast or 9 Lives nor Friskies but, will eat Purina ProPlan Turkey, SOME Wellness Core and some BFF though fish but, added in as tiny amounts to get her to eat). We've watered it down with bottled water and that helps some but, if we don't give her the kibble, she's eating less than 150 to 200 cals per day.

My questions are:
1) How many calories does a 14.4 lb cat (last weigh in at vets a month ago) need to not have liver issues
2) She's not due for her next Fructosamine level until July 7th at the vets (First was 505, last month was 403 so, better but, not in excellent control yet) and I've sent him her spread sheet yesterday so, waiting for him to get back to me on Monday about perhaps, upping her dosage but, that kibble (as seen on her SS is BAD for upping her numbers through the night) Her morning numbers are not great at all because of the kibble eating through the night but, NOT leaving it down means that she won't eat at all through the night when she's most hungry and her lowest numbers seem to be late at night (aka midnight to 1 a.m.). Any suggestions? (I've tried Nature's Valley Instinct at 13% on DMA, Wellness Core Grain Free at 16% DMA and no go on either of those so, it's the DM and m/d right now still)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have as I've tried tuna water, tuna, baked, roasted and fried chicken, cheese, parmesan cheese, warming, FortiFlora etc. on canned foods but, can't get her to eat left overs and can't be up all night long to get her fresh. Even the frozen versions left out are of no use).

What about the slow approach and just reducing the kibble slowly, like 5 kibbles less per day? Maybe after a couple of days, her tummy would be just hungry enough to eat more canned food.

Once her carbs are reduced, she may need less insulin, so you'll want to test more to catch those nadirs.

When trying to get my 2 remaining kibbleheads off dry, I put some in my blender making a powder - sprinkled that over the wet food. It got one completely off it easily - the other one still begs but no longer gets it. He will eat the wet food when he finally figures out begging isn't going to work. :)

Another option is to take the low carb food and bake it dry. Use a shallow pan, like a jelly roll pan, use a temp suitable for crackers, stir and turn periodically.

Have you tried putting the kibble on top of wet food? She may just pick it off, but is likely to get some of the wet food too and may then decide to eat it or at least may eat some to lower the overall carb content and increase the moisture content of the meal.

Calories needed will vary depending on her activity level and boy condition, I'd say 180-250 calories a day.

Thanks BJM... I will try that again...now that I can leave the windows open and not be gassed out of the kitchen ;) I did try it in the microwave and got it to a chewy consistency, even tossed it with some FortiFlora as they do with kibble (well, animal digest) but, maybe she's ready to try it again. :)

Thanks Squeaky...now THIS....I haven't tried! Going to try this next!!! :)

Thank you, Melanie & Smokey...yup...this I've tried. She's a smartie....she walks away totally from it all. It's like she's saying..."eeeewwww...the kibble is in the wet food now? YUCK!" :cat::confused:  :D But, I am going to try the idea of powdering the kibble and sprinkling it on top of the wet. It must be the digest or something that attracts her. Mind you...it may also be a texture thing too???? I could scream right about now...oh wait.....I just saw my neighbours jump so, I think I actually did that out loud!!!! ;)

I've also put kibble in a large soup plate, then taken a smaller bowl and pressed down on top to crush it. Works fairly well if you stir up the pieces occasionally.

Thanks BJ...hubby bought "The Bullet" and loves to play with it...so, perhaps, I will let him "have fun" in grinding but, the bowl idea is a good one!!!

Its low tech and easy to clean!

Now...that, I could use....the easy to clean and low tech!! Hubby is a "nasty Magic Bullet user"! I've been still cleaning up pancake batter and home made hummus off of the ceiling from his last attempts!!!!:rolleyes: :woot:
