Frustrated with high numbers

Hi,
Ollie was first diagnosed end of August 2015. First 2 units twice daily, then soon down to 1 unit twice daily. By end of October he was off the juice. This summer his numbers started going up. I figured it was the heat, a very uncomfortable summer even with a/c. He is asthmatic as well and that was aggravated too.

Brought him to the vet early fall and started him on Lantus again October 6. 1 unit twice daily. Couple of week ago or so (see spreadsheet) vet suggested upping dose to 1.5. It just seems to have no effect at all.

When Ollie was first diagnosed he was very sick, diabetic neuropathy, whole nine yards. All those symptoms eventually went away along with the high numbers the first time. Still no symptoms now even with the new high numbers.

I have a really good vet and I work with him. He is impressed (thanks to all I learned from this group!) with how much testing I do and how much data I can share with him to come up with a plan.

Hurt my back really badly so I won't be able to bring him in for a while to the vet and I will probably call him again soon but was just wondering if anyone has had this experience of things going so well and then numbers going back up like this. Feeling frustrated. I wonder if this is just the way it's going to be from now on. He is 12.5 years old.

Thanks.

Well for some reason I can't see any numbers on your spreadsheet after 9/27/15, but I can tell you that getting a 2nd remission is always a lot harder than getting a first one and generally we have to be pretty aggressive with dosing

What dose was he on when you stopped the insulin last time?

Hi Peggy,
It's just a thought I have but can I make a suggestion? Maybe you could also post in the Lantus forum as well. It can't hurt to have more eyes on your thread.:bighug:

Tried a different browser so I could see your spreadsheet

I think that you probably pulled the plug on the insulin a little too soon....We usually suggest dropping the dose from 1 unit down to .75, .5, .25 and finally .1 before taking them totally off so that the pancreas is supported for as long as possible. We want a strong remission, not necessarily a fast one

At this point, you just need to increase the dose until you get the results you want.....You're testing enough to do the Tight Regulation protocol which means increasing the dose by .25 unit every 6 cycles if he's not getting into green nadir's

Holding the dose too long when it's not getting the results you want can lead to glucose toxicity setting in.....which basically means you're letting his body get used to those higher numbers and it can take even a larger dose to get under control

I'd suggest going up to 1.75 tomorrow and holding that dose for 6 cycles and then re-evaluating how he's doing

Please do come on over to the Lantus Forum so you can get the best help possible!!

Hi Chris,
Not sure why you can't see it but insulin was stopped after 10/30/15 and the last dose was 1 unit. Thanks.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your suggestion. I could put it up on the Lantus forum too. I had it up there a few weeks ago. The suggestion was given to try 1.25. Vet approved 1.5 which is where we are now. Appreciate it! :)
