Hi, I completely appreciate and understand the value of home testing; however, Abby is not tolerating it consistently and I've tried tricks, bribes, etc. We are able to spot check her by pulling her out from under bed, ignoring the scratches, biting and hissing/catitude. She gets way too stressed at vet to do curves there (and the vet didn't think we would be able to get any tests at home given her temperament). After she was dropping too much at 2U, she's been consistently on .5U of Lantus for ~10 days. Her spot checking has been ok (although trending upward, which I attribute partially to going lower than .5U since its hard to tell on the syringe although I've now acquired better marked syringes). The vet just called with her fructosamine test results from yesterday and that was 383, which i guess is good regulation from vets perspective. Abby's appearance is improving (she is grooming) and she is drinking less, etc. The vet wants us to continue with .5 and recheck fructosamine in 2 months unless we notice changes at home and/or in our spot checking when we get it. This just doesn't feel like a manageable path forward to me. Abby is on to the routine and more and more we have to pull her out from hiding under the bed to even give her lantus shots (even though she is medically "getting better"). She is 15.5 years old and I am starting to wonder how long I keep this up. I hate blind dosing and even though I understand .5 is a low-ish dose, if Abby is miserable, do I keep it up? It's also hard because her vet tests at the beginning were very clearly stress induced high and I've now transitioned her to FF so the combo of FF + small dose of insulin appears to be keeping it under control (I wish I had tried to control with food only at the beginning), but Abby's getting more and more angry about the pokes so I struggle with the thought of just keep doing this for another 2 months before we recheck. I don't think its sustainable for Abby (or myself). Thanks for reading vent if you've made it this far. If anyone has any advice on whether keeping the course usually works for cats like Abby or other advice in general, we'd appreciate it. At this point I wonder if I should stop the lantus and see if she can regulate on food only, but don't know if that would be catastrophic for her long term.
