Frozen Pumpkin Problems

Hi all,
Looking for any suggestions.

I feed canned pumpkin with each meal. In an effort to reduce waste, every time I open a new can I split it into thirds. I have little plastic containers that hold 1/3 of a can perfectly. So I fill two of those and freeze them. Then I use the last 1/3 for a week and all is good.

So then 1 day before I toss what's left in the can, I pull one of the frozen containers out to thaw in the fridge. Then I start using that instead. But then in 24-36 hours Shenandoah starts getting huge stool and Foxy starts coughing up hairballs. I end up tossing the previously-frozen pumpkin and opening a new can, and these symptoms go away.
This has recurred enough times now that I'm pretty confident the frozen/thawed pumpkin is causing the problem.

Is there any special trick to freezing the pumpkin? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for reducing the waste? I can only get through < 1/3 can before it goes bad if I just leave it in the fridge.

I have not had any issues with frozen pumpkin. I do the same thing as you and freeze into portions because I buy a large can. I keep enough out for about 5 days, ( I give it to 2 cats and 2 dogs daily twice a day, 1 tps each)
I have not had any issues at all like you are describing. It seems coincidental but you say it has happened twice.

I also freeze my pumpkin (although I make my own, not canned) and I have not had any issues as you described. I make up and freeze enough to last about a month and it is always OK. Not sure why you are having this problem.

I spoon the pumpkin into ice trays and then freeze it. I then defrost the cube before I use it. Once they are frozen I put then in a freezer bag.

Thanks! I'll look into it.

ETA: Unfortunately, it looks like even though I'd waste less, the cost would be about twice as much as I'm paying now even considering the amount I throw away ($2/week for a can, $4/week for the packets).
