frontline

I posted something about frontline a while back that I feel I have to take back. I said that I thought frontline was responsible for the coincidental decline in kidney values in my cat- that may or may not be true, after all, he is 19- and has been diabetic 6 years now.

While i think all pesticides are bad- i've used it seasonally many times before on other cats and had no problems that I know of. Mind you, I use it once a YEAR in the Spring(Yes, it lasts several months, although they dont want you to know that because that means less profit). But what's the alternative, fleas? or over the counter garbage that kills? I lost a cat to Hartz mountain's flea medication (fact),years ago. So yes, all these pesticides make me a bit nervous.

Thank you to the creator of this site, and to all those who helped a newbie years ago. My cat is still alive because of all of you. How do I or anyone else, or the thousands of cats you saved thank you? .......................and doctors STILL don't tell people to home test!!!!

Hi Amy,
I remember reading that thread. You're right, the alternative is fleas, so it's sort of a rock/hard place situation. Losing a kitty, for whatever reason, is a terrible experience. And to link it to an OTC product? I can understand your grief and your caution.
I am glad to hear that Mickey is still okay.
My issue here is "ticks" rather than fleas. I have on in and out kitty named Mullet, and my sugarcat Bob is strictly indoor. But this place has one of the highest deer tick populations on the SE coast, and I routinely find them on me since I work outdoors most of the time. No doubt me and Mullet are carrying them inside, because when I find one on Bob, where else did it come from? I've been using Frontline Plus for the past 5-6 months, and have not seen ill effects with the kitties, but they definitely have controlled the tick problem which I am happy about.

Thanks for coming back and posting. Hope things continue to go well for you and Mickey.

edit - spelled Mickey's name wrong.

Hi Amy,

Pesticides scare me too. It doesn't seem right to apply them to your pet's skin. That said, I remember the days before Frontline, and I don't want to go back there. I'm hoping that Frontline is the lesser of two evils; I've used it since 1998, or thereabouts. Anyway, I believe the box insert states that Frontline Plus is effective in killing fleas for 3-months, and ticks for only 1-month.

I'm getting ready to give my cats the 5th dose this year of Frontline Plus, I didn't want to use it but Dottie got really anemic this past summer from fleas. I've never had fleas in my house and I've had cats for nearly 20 years! I don't think they are totally gone, because I'm still noticing some flea dirt. I'll probably have to spray again, I hate that more than Frontline. It's a hassle because I have to isolate the cats, then I'm always nervous about having chemicals on the carpet. I let the sprayed room dry for a few hours then I vacuum really well before I allow the cats in there.

I did say that his bloodwork was great 2 months before the frontline, right? if i could go back in time i wouldnt have put it on him. the poison had to have damaged his kidneys. what a coincidence. but then, dont give it and keep him inside? he loves the sun on his face, he loves walking in the yard.....

his kidneys took a bad turn after. he hasnt been feeling so well. what happens next? ) ;
