From pancreatitis to an URI

Poor Ben can't seem to get a break. I was feeling pretty confident that we were over the worst part of the pancreatitis because he's been eating pretty well. But this afternoon and evening he's been sneezing and sounding stuffy with some clear nasal drainage. It's looking like an upper respiratory infection. So far he's still eating but I know from experience that if he gets much more stuffed up that's going to change. * banging head against wall*. One of my friends in the rescue group I work with has a whole house full of sick cats with cold. Her four oldest are at the vet with IVs. Paws crossed it won't come to that for us.
 
Beware of fomites - contaminated clothing which carries infection. If you are a hugger, you can transfer infectious material from the other person's clothing to yours, then bring it to your home.
If you volunteer with other animals (shelter, transports, etc), you'll want to remove the clothing when you get home and wash it asap, to reduce the chances that anything infectious can be passed to your cats. And of course, wash your hands thoroughly upon returning home!
 
I'm not sure where he picked it up. I am so not a hugger and I haven't been around any cats but my own for at least a week. So far even though he's congested and his eyes are all watery, he's still eating. And I just checked his temperature and it's within normal range.

I don't know whether this is relevant but Saoirse started sneezing a lot earlier in the year (a few months after coming off Lantus). She didn't have any obvious signs of a URI when the vet checked her over. He thought it might be secondary to her other health issues. Initially he prescribed Bisolvon (mucolytic) but it didn't do anything for her. I asked our vet if it might be due to an allergic reaction to something in the environment and whether cats can bne given antihistamines. He prescribed Piriton for her and it cleared up the sneezing fairly quickly. She has been fine in this respect since.

I think he is a lucky furball. Seems to be almost back to normal. Stools are just a little loose and he is sneezing less today. He only needed 2 doses of the appetite stimulant. Saturday morning was the last dose. (I'm glad because they mixed the crushed pills into strawberry syrup. :banghead:) He is currently sitting in the hallway staring at me because it is only 30 minutes until dinner. Glad to read such a positive update, Lisa, and glad I was able to help you a little. It's not good being alone through a flare; they're very distressing for both cat and person.

Have the sneezes and the sniffles cleared up OK?

Still a few sniffles. And still preferring Sheba perfect portions over fancy feast. :-) I wouldn't care except it's about $.20 more a serving and I have two cupboards full of fancy feast. A coworker of mine solved the mystery of where he picked up the cold at however. It never occurred to me until she said it that he probably picked it up at his overnight stay in the vet clinic.
 
Good to hear that Ben's eating, even if he's got expensive tastes! Hopefully he'll rediscover his taste for Fancy Feast when he feels a little better. Fingers and paws crossed that the sniffles clear up soon. Your co-worker could well be on the money with the source of the lurgy. Actually, Saoirse started her sneezies after she had been to the specialist hospital for scans.

Thank you. Hope you had a good holiday. I'd say that Ben is pretty much back to his normal self. He's back to eating fancy feast with the occasional snack of young again dry food. And that was one of the best Christmas presents. Thank you again so much for your help during all this.
 
That's marvellous news, Lisa! I'm so pleased and relieved for you both. :D Thank you for the update. I'm very glad I was able to help you a little during this time. Pancreatitis flares can be so frightening.

We didn't have such a good day yesterday: Saoirse was a bit constipated and uncomfy in the afternoon but she picked up after she managed to poop successfully. I'm adding a little pumpkin to her food now.

As you may know, between the early stage CKD and not enough insulin over the last few months, Saoirse's fur started shedding (mostly her guard hairs) and her coat was getting noticeably thinner. I have a little good news to share with you, though. I was stroking her a minute ago and ... my fingertips brushed up against some new fur growth!!! After her last Spec fPL was so high, I've been really, really worried. This is the first boost we've had in a long time. Best Christmas present ever!!! (((Saoirse)))

I'm so delighted that Ben is recovering well from his flare. Hoping he's back to 100% in no time. :)
