Friskies Special Diet food....the cause of vomiting?

Since the vet told me to check the food I was giving Calley I figured out that she has been eating both Friskies Special Diet and regular Friskies can food. I didn't realize that there were two different types of can food in the same flavor. So now I'm wondering if that change is what upset Calley's belly?

I fed her this morning a bit before I gave her the insulin and then I locked her in the room where I work to watch her and she did not vomit her meal this morning. She has reduced her peeing a lot which I am very happy about. When will the voracious eating and drinking slow down?

I checked her ketone level this morning when she peed and got a negative color on the stick. :)

I'm about to give her her evening shot. Let's hope that she keeps this meal down.

The Friskies Special Diet food could be the cause of the vomiting. You could experiment and see if that is the cause. Remove from the food rotation for at least a week and see what happens. My Wink eats the Friskies Special Diet Turkey& Giblet and has no issues with vomiting. He hates the fishy flavors, which is good because too much fish in a cats diet is bad for them. Too many contaminants like mercury to feed them fish more than once a week or so.

When will the voracious eating and drinking slow down?
When she is better regulated. It's extremely difficult to regulate a cat on Humulin N unless you are shooting 3 times a day. Most cats only get 6-8 hours of use out of a shot of Humulin N.

Why would the vet put Calley on an insulin that is so short acting? When I told her that I had not been rolling the insulin and questioned how much insulin Calley had been getting, the vet said that with Humulin N that might have made a difference but with the Glargine/Lantus it wouldn't have mattered. At least I think that is what she said.

So should I ask the vet to go back to Lantus or to try another long acting cat insulin? I'm afraid of all these changes and how it is affecting Calley. Am I doing more harm than good?

Will I have to start over again at one unit/2x daily with a new insulin?

Is it unusual for a cat to try several types of insulin before finding one that helps?

Thanks all for the support. Lord knows I need it.

Mine all eat special diet...no problems. BUT that is all they eat. It could upset your kitty's tummy. Like Deb said, experiment!

Some cats do change insulins. Just like in humans, some things work for one cat and some things for other cats. There are cats who have tried several insulin over time. Humulin isn't one that many have success with. However remember that your vet might not have had a diabetic feline before. They see different animals with different conditions all the time.

Lantus (Glargine), Levemir, and ProZinc/PZI are good, long lasting insulins that many on this board use. You could discuss with your vet...see how open they are to a possible change.
