Hi guys, was just looking around at Friskies cat food and have slowly noticed rice creeping into the Friskies Pâtés over the past month. Was just at Walmart, and couldn't find any Pates without rice in them. Just wanted to let you folks know to keep an eye out. I am in Northern CA, don't know how far the change in formula has shifted. Sorry if this has already been posted.

I've noticed this in Friskies, too. We've been using it, but I'm increasingly inclined to switch entirely to President's Choice Finicky Gourmet canned foods -- almost identical ingredients, but no rice/rice flour to slightly bump up the carb count. I suppose if you're outside Canada, though, this brand (the 'house' brand of The Real Canadian Superstore) isn't available.

Friskies has always had some rice in the formulas, which is why I can't feed them to Bandit. For some reason he is very sensitive to the carbs from rice.

Two alternatives are Special Kitty Pates from Walmart, or Sophistacat/Grreat Choice from Petsmart. Both are pretty much the same as Friskies but without the rice and lower carbs.

The only special kitty pate I have seen seems to have rice or wheat middlings. Do you know of any without? I have been feeding the special kitty selects (I think that's the name) it's their form of Fancy Feast, but those get pricey (47 cents a can) when feeding 5-6 a day between two kitties.

I can only find Sophisticat in the 3oz cans as well, not in anything larger. I guess another trip to Petsmart is in order.

Oh! I do some have some Grreat Choice! I bought some in my taste test rounds, but I was afraid to feed it because it wasn't on the lists and it was subject to the food recall a few years back. I'll try it on them. Maybe I can supplement their Special Kitty Select diet with it.

I have tried a little of the rice based food, and I do notice my cat's BG responds to it. I do miss the days of buying a nice big bag of kibble and not stressing over carbs. Oh well. :)

There are a few types of Special Kitty Pates (not the fancy feast type ones) that come in large cans that have no rice--Turkey & Giblets is one. Basically, any of the ones on Binky's chart that's 5% carbs or less don't have rice. The Sophistacat/Grreat Choice (they changed the name but the food is the same) also has several low carb flavors that come in 13 and 5 oz cans.

I found out today that the Special Kitty Turkey and Giblets (and maybe others) now contains GROUND CORN as well as wheat gluten!! Definitely not OK. I started a thread about the impending food quality issues before seeing this one

I don't know... I read it myself on the label, though. :( Maybe it's a Canada thing.... Next time I'm in Walmart I'll take a pic of the label.

I read your thread and it makes me quite sad that corn and rice are abundant in our cat food staples. I was quite pleased in knowing that I could grab a can of Friskies at the supermarket (Petsmart is 20 miles away) and still feed my babies during difficult times if my checkbook was looking lean.

We all need to pay attention to the labels during these times. I can't believe how expensive Fancy Feast has become. I hope they don't start adding grain to the classics.
