Midnight loves the Friskies pates. I offer him a full, fresh can in the morning and again in the evening. He's eating 3/4 of the can on average. For those of you who are regulated and feed Friskies, how much are your fur babies eating? His appetite seems to be slowing a little and he's not so ravenous when a fresh can is put down. I hope this is a reflection of his lower BG and another sign of possible remission. I know ECID but I'm curious to know what others have experienced.
I get confused about how many calories a cat needs. Our guy is overweight and needs to lose but the vet wants to get his metabolism leveled out first then we can talk about putting him on a diet. She also says there's a good chance he'll lose some weight simply from being on canned vs dry.

My precious female Nala whom we lost to cancer last December had fatty liver 5 years ago. She ended up with a feeding tube for a few weeks but I will tell you that experience made me a helicopter mom regarding how much my cats eat ;) whether they're sick or healthy.

This is another one of those ECID questions

The best thing you can do is weigh him once a week....if he needs to lose weight, reduce the amount you're feeding a little.

I bought a baby scale to weigh China, but you can use a regular bathroom scale if you don't want to buy a baby scale. Just weigh yourself, pick up Midnight and do the math.

There are some general formulas for calculating caloric intake for a certain weight of the kitty BUT with ECID, they don't factor in personalized characteristics. I could calculate a very generalized calorie intake for your Midnight based on his ideal weight. Once again, I can't find a way to incorporate factors like: metabolism, physiology, other health issues, etc. With that, he may lose weight just from cutting the dry like the Vet stated :cat:

As for the eating, yes my boy was on Friskies (currently having some food issues with his bout of pancreatitis), and as his insulin therapy progressed the ravenous hunger settled down.:) I update my Signature if I change anything but I think I'm leaving his Friskies portions/time in there right now if you want to see amounts.

There is a formula for calculating the amount of calories needed daily based on weight, or desired weight: 13.5 x weight of cat(or desired weight) +70 = amount of calories needed. So, for example, if your cat weighed 12 lbs, you would need 13.5 x 12 (162) +70 = 232 calories needed daily. This is just a guideline, your cat may need more or less, depending on many factors, but at least this gives you an idea of where to start.:):)
