saw the commercials about Friskies adding more “ gravy” to their pate food. Is this going to change the carbs count?

Probably. I guess we'll see. *sigh* The cats like the gravy, but the gravy doesn't particularly like them :-p

Most of the foods with gravy tend to be high in carbs. I was going to write Friskies tonight about how I think they are slowly killing our kitties with all these carbs. :)
Explain that because of their food ( pate ) they are helping hundreds and hundreds of cats with diabetes and adding more gravy to this pate is going to stop all of the good work that they were doing for the cats. I really hope that this “ gravy” doesn’t mess us up. It’s so hard finding food that most people can afford, meaning Friskies and fancy feast. It will be tough if I have to start buying the more expensive cat food. I feed all of my cats the same food .

In the meantime until you can find out how the change effects the carb count I would strain out the gravy.

Hope you don't mind but I quoted you when I wrote.

Where did you send the letter to?

Maybe we should all send in letters, more voices might make a difference.

(Also, maybe share the letter, only of you're comfortable, so we can use it as a template?)

Sadly, because of the extra gravy I switched over to FF. But w only 3 oz cans, I have to buy so much more & spend twice as much :( At least until we all find out if or how much the carb count changed

Regarding "Pate" vs "Extra Gravy Pate. As noted in the links below, the Pate has more protein and calories. The Extra Gravy has water as the second ingredient, therefore I believe, all Friskies did was dilute the product to give more gravy. :banghead: I already add a lot of extra water to the pate.

Oh, and you also get the pleasure of paying more for that "extra gravy". :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Figures. Thanks for the info :-)

Depends on what the gravy is made of. If it’s gluten based then ya undoubtably more carbs. If it’s made of water or guar gum or gelatin or whatever then probably not a significant difference. The answer is always in the ingredients

Just curious why you made this statement since gluten is a protein
"Gluten is a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, rye, spelt and barley."
from: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318606.php

@Larry and Kitties Your question also made me curious. I think @Butterball may have been referring to Gluten as an "ingredient" found in grain, therefore carbohydrates, which can elevate glucose in the body. Only time I ever make Gravy is at Thanksgiving, and I use Flour. Yummy!

Nutrition is so difficult to comprehend at times; so many variables and contradictions. No wonder there are so many questions on this forum about kitty diets! I certainly do enjoy learning about anything that concerns my feline love bugs! :D

Glutten based was referring to grain based ingredients. I guess I should've used "grain free" instead. So if a gravy product has "wheat glutten" in it, then it's assuredly high carb, or "medium" carb but certainly not low carb. If the gravy base is something like "chicken broth" (A.K.A water) or something like zantham or guar gum without wheat glutten then it can still be low carb. The gravy in cat food is usually one of those ingredients.

I bought a couple cans of the pate with extra gravy. Trying to calculate the carb % myself from Dr. Pierson’s website, I get 3% for the turkey and giblets. Here is my math...
protein 8%
Fat 5%
Fiber 1%
Moisture 82%
Ash 3.5%
Total: 99.5%
100-99.5= 0.5
0.5/18= 0.027777 or 2.7% rounded up 3%.

Did I calculate that right?! Brady LOVES the “extra gravy”. But it’s not a thick gravy like other gravy foods. It’s more the consistency of what I get when I add water to a pate food. It just seems too good to be true...have we really found a food Brady loves, low in carbs AND affordable??

Link for info on how I calculated.

So basically, the “ gravy” has NOT changed the carb count enough for us to avoid it?

I’m no expert, but I don’t think so.

I’d like to also point out that there are two separate products. The friskies pate food, which I’m unsure if they’ve changed and the newer friskies pate with extra gravy. So I think you can avoid the gravy if you really wanted to. When we first tried friskies pate it was just the regular one and Brady wouldn’t touch it. But he likes the extra gravy kind. But, he was also pretty sick when we first tried the pate, so it could have been a combo of the two.

Like I said, I’m not an expert, but I think they are two different product lines. I’ve only seen the pate extra gravy at Walmart, Amazon and Chewy. And if you follow the links you can see the product label. It’s clearly marked extra gravy. When I did the calculations (as above) I get 3% carbs for the turkey and giblets, but I’m not positive that I did the calculations correct. That’s why I originally posted was to see if I did it correctly and no one has answered that question yet. I emailed friskies to see if they would send me the typical nutrition facts, but I haven’t received a reply yet. Sorry I don’t have more information.

To get a better comparision, I got a can of regular pate this morning and opened it for Brady. It definitely has very, very minimal “gravy” than the new extra gravy line. It’s also not as moist and the consistency is thicker. I just bought it this morning for the sake of comparison, so I don’t think the regular pate line has changed at all. The cans are clearly marked pate or extra gravy pate. And the only brick and mortar store I’ve seen the extra gravy in is Walmart.

Finally heard from Purina regarding my email & here is their response:

This is the response I got (finally) about the carb count in the Friskies pate extra gravy. But it seems extremely low, so I’m not so sure I should trust it... I didn’t ask about the “with tuna” flavor because I don’t feed that to Brady.

So I guess take it as you wish. Brady loves it and his blood glucose has been consistently in range since switching to this food.

Thank you very much for sharing this info. Always looking for variety within the limits.

I’ve been curious about if they’ve started adding more gravy to their regular food, too. I know it looks like they haven’t, but I recently bought Ziggy a regular pack of Friskies Poultry Favorites and since he’s been eating it, his blood sugars have surged to an average of over 600. It doesn’t say “extra gravy” on the pack but there is a lot of leftover gravy in the empty cans (which I give to him as a distraction so I can give him his shot).

The values appear to be weight %s of the canned product with the water, not % of calories.
From those values I calculate 2.1% of calories from carbs.
Based on the ingtedients
Meat By-Products, Water Sufficient For Processing, Poultry By-Products, Chicken, Turkey, Fish, Artificial And Natural Flavors, Carrageenan, Calcium Sulfate, Added Color, Guar Gum, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Magnesium Sulfate, Mono And Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine, Choline Chloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Manganese Sulfate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide. A627217.

The 2.1% seems reasonable

so glad you posted this thread! ordered a case and my extremely picky youngest 16mth old gobbled up 3/4 of a can of this (with turkey version) in one sitting!! he has turned his nose to friskies pates in the past and over 2 dozen plus low carb canned food we have tried, except for his beloved fancy feast turkey pate that he no longer wants to eat since label, and i gather ingredient, change and the canned American journey turkey he went from liking to only tolerating when really hungry. he refuses to eat dry kibbles, raw food, homemade and has started losing weight these last few weeks and then i finally got him eating vital essential turkey patties regularly (as long as it was dry) and then poof it gets discontinued according to chewy (grrrr), so this thread was great timing for us. did see commercial about it a couple times but, assumed it was not going to be low carb so didn't bother trying it out till i read the info here.. i was hoping tux would like it too since that is who i really bought it for but, nope it was a no go for him..

Will say i was still hesitant to try this new food when i ordered it since we had some health issues with most of our cats earlier in the year because of friskies pates but, i am hoping that whatever was making cats sick back then is no longer an issue, only time will tell i guess.

thank you so much for writing them. I haven't seen the extra gravy one at my grocery store but was concerned that they would replace the regular pate with the extra gravy one in time. Glad to hear the carb count is not significantly higher. Lilly loves the classic pate's.
