Does Frisskies TastyTreasure can food have less than 10% carbohydrates? We are currently feeding our diabetic cat, PurrFace, Fancy Feast Classic but would like to offer some variety. Also which brand would you recommend Merrick, EVO, Nature's Variety, Wellnest or Blue Buffalo?

The Tasty Treasures all contain soy flour and corn-starch, which means they are likely high in carbs. The ingredients you want to avoid in cat foods for diabetics are wheat, corn, soy, and rice.

I currently feed Bandit about 2/3rds Merricks--Cowboy Cookout, Grammy's Pot Pie, and Surf and Turf (for the high protein, low fat, low phosphorus content) and about 1/3 Fancy Feast Classics (for variety). Lately I've been substituting the Sheba premium pate foods for the fancy feast sometimes (NOT the Sheba premium cuts which are higher in carbs and have similar looking cans).

With the premium foods, I've tried Wellness, EVO, Blue Buffalo and NV instinct all at different points, and the Merricks was definitely the winner for us. The higher fat in the other premium brands caused some upset in Bandit's GI tract, but most cats handle the fat fine. Bandit has a history of obesity and triaditis so his needs are a little different when it comes to lower fat. I would get a few cans of each and see what your cat likes, and how he handles them.

Julia & Bandit. Thank you for the advise. I'll try the Merrick favors you suggested as well as the Sheba Premium Pâté. We have two other, non diabetic, cats that we are transitioning from dry food to wet can food. They have been getting can food twice a day normally but the dry food was free fed. Thank you for your response. I've only been on the FDMB for about a week and I'm amazed not only at the knowledge of the members but also how quickly they respond to a post. It is greatly appreciated.

Have you seen the food charts and lists?

Here are the food charts/lists that we use:
Binky's canned food charts
Pet Food Nutritional Values list
Hobo's Guide To Nutritional Values
Dr. Lynne's Wet Food list
List of low carb gluten free Fancy Feast

On Binky's charts, stick with foods that have a number 10 or less in the carbs colum. On the Pet Food Nutritional Values Chart and Hobo's Guide, look at the %kcal from carbs column and choose foods that have a number 10 or less.

Any of those brands are good to feed  It's recommended to feed whatever low carb brand that your cat likes to eat, you can easily find in the local stores, and you can afford. There are lots of suitable foods from the inexpensive bands found at the supermarket to the expensive high end premium brands sold only at non-chain pet stores.

Make sure to get Natur'es Variety Instinct, not the Prarie Homestyle one. The Instinct line is grain-free and suitable for diabetics.

Some cats are pretty picky about food so you may need to try several brands to see what your cats like and don't like.

squeem3. Thank you for food list references and other information, I really appreciate it. I've learned so much from this board already. Thank you again.
