1. What's the first thing you dreamed of being when you grew up?
2. How did that change as you grew into a young adult (high school age)?
3. If you didn't pursue your childhood career dreams, why not?
4. Are you happy with your current career? If not, what would you change?
5. If money were no object, what job would you hold?
 
1. What's the first thing you dreamed of being when you grew up?
I don't remember ever dreaming of a career actually, everything was pretty immediate, like... can I go play now?

2. How did that change as you grew into a young adult (high school age)?
In high school I really wanted to be a photo-journalist for a while, and a Buddhist monk for a while.

3. If you didn't pursue your childhood career dreams, why not?
Austerity turned me off the one (and the idea, no longer true in today's day & age, that you had to be a man, preferably an Asian one, to do that), and my lack of interest in actually getting out there and getting the news helped the other to fade away into obscurity.

4. Are you happy with your current career? If not, what would you change?
Sort of in-between things at the moment :cry: . To change that, it would be nice to have a job!!! :lol:

5. If money were no object, what job would you hold?
I would like to run a foundation where I could give money to people & organizations where I think they are doing good stuff, and also fund some projects that I think someone should be working on if no one is (like 100% replacing animal testing with alternative testing methods, and cleaning up that crazy garbage dump in the Pacific, not to mention 100 other things that need fixing!).

2. How did that change as you grew into a young adult (high school age)? got pregnant right out of high school :mrgreen:
3. If you didn't pursue your childhood career dreams, why not? had a bouncing baby boy to support
4. Are you happy with your current career? If not, what would you change? yes and no...too much drama
5. If money were no object, what job would you hold? a breast cancer researcher

became totally clueless

some days yes, some days no. If I could, I would be stinking rich.
5. If money were no object, what job would you hold?
snort, money wasn't my first priority, that's how I got where I am today!

for some stupid reason accounting got my interest in high school. started college pursuing that, decided that was boring, and ended up changing again to psychology. LOL!!! OMG! I HAVE A KITTEN WRAPPED AROUND MY ANKLE!! WOW! HE NEEDS A NAIL TRIM!!!

met a man that had the bright idea to move to australia and when that didn't work out we followed his dream instead of mine :roll:

4. Are you happy with your current career? If not, what would you change?

mostly not. i don't mind the actual work but dealing with the public and various government entities drives me batty. what would i change? i'd figure out some way to make it mandatory for only intelligent people to own cars and be allowed out in public. LOL!!

this of course is gonna sound cliche but i'd buy a county somewhere and run the biggest nicest cat spa ever known to man. seriously, i'd be working with cats doing something......anything. :)

I started to realize that it was a lie.

Life taught me that there was no job like that.

For the most part. I would add another person to lighten the load.

1. A veterinarian.
2. I wanted to become a teacher as I got into high school and early college.
3. I discovered that I don't like science much, so that pretty well nixed the vet idea. I started out my college life as an elementary ed. major, but I studied abroad (in France) my sophomore year and I decided that I wanted to major in French. I loved it, but it's a totally useless degree without either a teaching certificate or a master's degree (to do translation/interpreter work).
4. I got laid off awhile ago and haven't been able to find anything since then. So, no, I guess I'm not happy with my current career. ;-)
5. That's what I'm trying to figure out. :? If I had that answer, I think life would be a little easier.
 
LOL, I forgot the pretty princess dream!!! Yeah, that's it! No wonder life does not seem as rosy as promised with a setup like that. :cry:

I don't think I ever really realized (until fairly recently) that there is a very practical aspect to finding a career path that you enjoy. Leave aside all the "follow your dreams! live your bliss!" cr*p that has not helped me find a job or be content with the ones I've had, I say it's "find something that pays decently, doesn't make you throw up, and that will still be in demand in a terrible job market". Ah, my 20/20 hindsight. :) I too have a degree in "loved-the-experience-but-doesn't-pay-the-bills".

My sister once suggested I follow that principle of "do what you love & the money will follow". I told her that I DO do that all the time, I stay at home & hang out with the cats & stuff, and that's what I love doing.... so where's the money?!? I think she gave me a dirty look, LOL, if I remember right. :lol:

Sarah, one thing I do miss about DC is the international aspect, and all the groups that are non-profits, associations, or somehow connected to politics/international affairs. You might find something you like there that actually fits in with your interests! I don't know about any France connections, but it seems like there would be some...

Yup, that's what I did. I took a job I wasn't sure of, got good at it over 10 years and now I'm stuck with it.

But, it continues to let us live indoors, with electricity, running water and a little bit left over for freeze dried treats at the end of the month.

Life is good! :mrgreen:

But I'm still keeping my eye open for that pretty pretty princess gig.
 
I don't think the pretty pretty princess gig is quite as wonderful as all the recruitments books make it out to be. Remember Princess Di?
