Hi,

My cat was just diagnosed and had the Freestyle libre 2 sensor put on by the vet today. I got home, downloaded the app, I scanned the device and it gave me a read. And that was it. As far as I can tell it is supposed to give me minute by minute reads? It's doing nothing. The sensor is still on her and my phone is close to her. I can show the screenshot on my phone if a mod approves. Please help if you can.

I am so sorry you are going thru this, but is not an uncommon situation with the Libre, these sensors as well as the readings are very irregular, I myself went thru hell and back when my Corky got home from the hospital with one on, they fall off they stop working before the 14 days and like you do not work at all, if by the 10 minutes of waiting and it continues to do this in the monitor, the sensor is no good, you can call the customer service number that's in the back of the box, and request a replacement they are guaranteed however they can take a bit more than 48 hours for you to get, they will replace it very time, but very important you cannot tell them is for your cat or they will not replace it, they will ask you if your skin has lotion if there's no hair in the area etc, , the thing is that you will be in a constant panic when you get readings, the monitor will not read higher than 350 it will just read HI, and when in low numbers (2digits) it will read in the 40-50 when in reality it's probably in the 70's, most of us her use the human monitor and strips ReliOn Premier, it is accurate and totally inexpensive vs the Libre Sensor that is over $75.00 each every 14 days or when it stops working, so you have the option to test without there is a sticky not in the main forum that you can learn how to home test, with a lancet and strips, it's a breeze:bighug::cat::cat:
PS
also it is not a minute to minute reading is when you place the app to the sensor that you will get a reading, I never installed the app, I used the blue monitor, placing close to the sensor and get a reading

Hi,

am using the libre 3 but as far as I know, the libre 2 needs a scan every time you want to get a reading. It is not scanning or what happened?

Did the vet used vet bond or any kind of glue to put on the sensor? That can damage the sensor and that is the reason why many sensors, which get installed by a vet, fail after short time.

There is a very good facebook group which helps people to install the sensor themselves on their pets. I can highly recommend them. I started to do it myself since some time and most sensors last for the full 14 days. The numbers on the sensor are not always the same as on the handheld, as the sensor measures tissue fluid. But after some time you will find out how they correlate.

Anyhow, it is important to learn how to test on a handheld too. The sensor can fail unexpectedly and then you need a way to get readings. Good luck with it!

Hello, Heike has given the exact response I would have given.

It sounds like there may have been a problem with the installation of the Libre. If glue was used, that can flood the sensor and cause it to fail.

Also, I see Corky’s mom mentioned if you get the 10 minute warning that’s the end of the sensor. That’s not always the case.
Sometimes the glucose is Just going up or going down very quickly and the sensor needs to catch up, so don’t be too terribly scared of that, it does happen and then the sensor starts to work again.
However, they do fail certainly more than I would like.

Personally, I usually Libre 3 because I cannot poke my cat many times a day. She just won’t tolerate it. I do poke her when she goes Low so that I can keep her safe, making sure she doesn’t go too low.

Hope this helps and good luck! Keep asking questions. We are happy to help.

Where are you located? In the US the Libre 2 sensor has to be manually scanned to get a reading while in most other countries the LS automatically send BGs to the phone app periodically when within the 20 ft bluetooth range. I do not know if the readings get update every minute or 5 minutes or some other periodicity.

Hi everyone, I really appreciate all the responses - thank you. I have spent the day trying to figure this out and realise now I left out a critical detail - I am in Ireland. I am completely new to this and did not realise that Libre is location specific - it turns out the old Libre sensors were retired here in Ireland at the end of September. However the pharmacy my veterinarian uses sold them the old version. I am hopefully going to get the latest version attached tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone who commented

Good luck with your new sensor!

Hello,
My cat, Tigger, was just diagnosed with diabetes. Yesterday the vet tried to install the Freestyle Libre which Tigger promptly and successfully knocked off. Today he is spending the day with the vet for reads on his levels to see if the 2 unit dose is proper. In the future should I be monitoring his glucose daily? They did not mention anything about this, although when I pick him up today they may. We are a very active family and travel a lot. We are trying to train family members for the insulin injections because my husband and I will be out of town for a week at the end of the month. Now I am worried about EVERYTHING from here on out.

Hi, yes ideally you would monitor his glucose daily and send the glucose curves to your vet so that they can tell you how to adjust the insulin dose. If you travel alot then I guess you would be in a financial position to buy another smartphone(it doesn't have to be an expensive one), install the app on that and leave it with the cat all day so that you have constant glucose readings. This is what I've done as it's not practical to leave my personal phone in one place all day. Also you can connect the app to your vets so that they automatically receive the data. If your cat keeps knocking off the sensor, get a post surgery bodysuit/onesie for him

Also, you can try a T-shirt as well If he will tolerate that :)
