Fred has been growling at me when I start to give him his insulin shot. I'm good about going in at different parts of the scruff and at different angles. I'm afraid his experience with the sitter and vet/ animal hospital has him miffed and for good reason. The sitter even sent me pics of her hand ( while I was at Cancun) where he clawed her. Her description of testing/ injection times was not pleasant. Needless to say she will no longer be sitting with Fred. She is a vet tech. I back off when he growls at me. I go put the shot away. Come back and love on him and walk away again. Get the shot and try again from behind, really quick. He's been spending time under the bed too. I think he will travel with me when possible, in the future. I'm just glad his numbers are better. Hope yall are doing ok.

Make sure to give him a low carb treat after every test or shot.
And at non-test times, spend some time with him just playing or cuddling.

We've been spending a lot of time together. I go back to work tomorrow. And I always give turkey bacon nibbles at shot time. He's never growled me. This last week was hell apparently.

I'm thinking perhaps the Vet tech must have been rough with Fred when she gave him his shot and now he's resistant to getting it. Hopefully, he'll get over it really soon.

Sometimes Lulu growls at me, too. When I give her her shot when she's eating, it's "Grrr, nom, nom, nom, grrr, nom, nom..."
Treats and lots of cuddling and scritches seems to help her quickly get back to her lovey-dovey self.

mine growls at me.... and has lashed out in the past.

one thing to check....
it can make a difference how the bevel is on your needle.... You want the bevel facing up
there is a picture of the bevel about halfway down this page

if you do it upside down , it can hurt more....

it does sound like he had a rough time..... and she was determined to do what you wanted done....
mine would have the same negative experience if I ever left.

maybe you can find something even better as a treat so he'll re-learn a better association.
mine cooperates best when there are chopped raw shrimp on the plate in front of her....
i still get the same gr gr nom nom gr .... just like Lulu but there is more cooperation.

I didn't know that about the needle! Thanks ! I'll check it next time. But I really think he got stuck painfully while I was gone.

You might want to try a pheromone collar just until you can get him past the trauma reaction. You can get them at pet food stores. I had to use one for Squeaker in the beginning.

My kitty growled at me the first few times I tried shooting. I learned that some spots she doesn't like touched, so I make sure to avoid those. Also, I just practiced tenting her skin without shots, randomly through the day. It seems that the breakthrough was giving her some fresh catmint, and while she was euphoric, tented her skin a lot. She barely noticed me. So that got her used to me grabbing at her, the final trick was shooting during her meals. She is so oblivious to me while eating, it's no problem at all anymore.

I might try NOT hiding her stuff so she can see it while good things are happening, like treats and dinner, to desensitize her again. Good luck!!!

Tonight we sat together for awhile and I loved on him. Then I gave him his fav salmon feast that he only gets a couple times a week. While he was eating I loved him some more and gave him the shot with no problems. No grrrrr nom nom nom. It was good.

Bud used to take his injections like a champ. I moved from injecting in the neck to his side/flank and now he's been jumpy and tries to take off on me. Started sprinkling FortiFlora on his food and he sits there and licks it off, oblivious to me injecting, now. Maybe I should put that stuff on auto ship... Lol

I did not know about the bevel ! :( Now I do ! Thank you ! I'm holding the needle properly and also letting the shot sit for atleast 20-30 minutes before shooting. Learn something new everyday.
