Frazzles first curve

Hi everyone, frazzle has been on ProZinc for 3 weeks now, 1u BID. Clinically he's doing great, playful, active and not pu/pd! Which is a change from how he was when I first took him home 3 weeks ago (he was a foster kitty from the shelter, but we have decieded to keep him) :-D

So I'll admit, I do not test before every shot, I know I know! But today I'm doing his first curve and I think I need to up the ProZinc. AMPS 282,+4 242, +8 293 ( he's due for last reading at 8:30) should I shoot 1.5 units tonight? His numbers are going down from when he was at the shelter, they were up in the 450's.

And I have some leftover u100 syringes from my other cat who had DM, does anyone know where I can find the conversion chart to be able to use them with ProZinc?

Thanks for your help!

Annemarie

Annemarie,
The link to your spreadsheet is not working. Can you go back into your profile and "edit signature" and make sure that the link to it starts with "" and ends with "" ? You might have to go to the spreadsheet at googledocs, and re-copy the link.

Here is a link to the conversion chart to use the U100 syringes.

I think an increase might make sense, but I'd like to be able to see the SS first before advising a dose change.

I can't get the link to work for the SS, any suggestions?? I do need to start testing before shooting but I've never been able to get the darn thing to work!!

Help!!!

Annemarie

Annemarie,
Can you access the SS? If so, I think you go to "file" and one of your choices should be "publish to the web". You want to make sure that the box is checked that says "Automatically republish when changes are made.". Towards the bottom, you'll see the web address for the spreadsheet. It should start with "https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?" and have a lot of gobble-d-gook after that? Copy the whole thing, and then open your user control panel here on the board. Click on the Profile tab, and choose "edit signature".
Replace whatever link is in your signature by pasting what you copied from googledocs. Make sure that you put "" in front of it, and " at the end.

So those are the only numbers you have so far? OK, has he been on 1u doses ever since you started giving him insulin?
You definitely want to test before every shot, Annemarie. It looks like today you have been able to test successfully? It is a challenge still, or has it gotten a little bit easier?

I can't access the SS, I think I need to start over. Is there a link to help we with that?

Yes, he has been on 1unit since he started treatment which was 3 weeks ago. He's great for testing, and when I do test him I have no issues...I just haven't been testing him. Money is an issue, my fiancé is unemployed and is having a hard time finding work. I do have the Relion micro which has the cheaper strips but we have to be conscious wherever we can be. And unfortunately it's not always in the budget.

Here is the link to how to start a SS if you have to start over.

Hoping you can figure out the finances and be able to get more strips. You can buy them from ADW online, I think, and sometimes you can find them on Ebay but you have to make sure the expiration date is far enough into the future that they don't expire before you can use them up. Also check in the Supply Closet forum because sometimes people who don't need them any more will post them there.

I wouldn't advise upping the dose unless you can spare a few strips. Anytime you change the dose you want to be able to get tests between shots so you can make sure the BG stays in the safe range.

Carl

Ok, I'm going to attempt the SS again! Hopefully I can do it. I took his BG 12 hours post to finish the curve and it was 320. I understand how important it is to test and we'll just have to budget for the strips. Hopefully eBay will help and I can find some cheap ones there. I do have about 15 strips so I can test him on a regular basis, can I up his units?

If you need help with the spreadsheet, send me a pm and I will set it up for you.

We usually suggest increasing by .25 rather than by .5. If you have the U100 needles and the conversion chart, you can do that. His curve today was rather flat but not bad numbers.

ok, i think the SS is all set!! YAY!! :thumbup :thumbup flip_cat flip_cat and i entered in his curve from today. what should i be writing in the boxes on the right?

as far as increasing his dose, i can start tomorrow morning. the chart for u100 conversion doesnt go up to .5, only .4 or .6...which should i do?

Annemarie,

Just wanted to say hello and say you are doing a GREAT job with Frazzle. Looks like his numbers aren't that bad. What are you feeding him?

Keep up the good work!!! Hope you will be able to budget the strips in soon!

lori and copper

Luckily he isnt picky! I feed him FF classics, he only gets seafood once a week. He also gets Friskie's Pate, turkey and giblets. He is on Cosequin too, he gets 2 capsules sprinkled on his PM feeding. Ive read on here that it doesnt affect numbers, i hope its true.

thanks! we are trying

I tend to be conservative - I think I would do 1.2 or 1.4 I would plan to test before each shot and midcycle (5-7 hours after the shot) as often as possible. Plan to stick with this dose for several cycles unless you see low numbers (under 200 at preshot, under 50 at nadir)

I needed help with my picture. You might ask on Health.

Annemarie,
I gave Bob cosequin, one cap on top of breakfast, and one cap on top of dinner. It didn't affect his numbers.

Carl

So his AMPS was 585!!! I gave him 1.2 units, I'll check his BG in a few hours. I did have a hard time getting blood this morning, can his number be elevated from stress even if he's at home? He was calm through the whole thing, he's not a nasty cat at all! But do you think he can feel my stress level rising??

Annemarie

That is odd. Tested before food, right? Whenever you get a weird number, retest. It could be too little blood or too much.

Let's see how he does today on the 1.2

You are heating the ear, right? You can use a sock filled with raw rice until very warm in the microwave, or a prescription bottle filled with very warm water. It may take a minute to fully heat his ear.

What size lancets? The 30-31 gauge made for humans makes too small a hole for cats. We suggest 25-28 gauge. And you can always double poke - 2 quick pokes in the same spot.

Do you have something to poke against? Some people like the pill bottle or a folded kleenix. We used a small make up sponge.

If you ever get a drop and he starts to bolt, get the blood droplet on your fingernail and test from there.

Yes, we are warming his ear first. I think my lancets are to small, he does bleed but never enough from one stick to run the test. Do you think his high number could be stress induced?

Good idea about putting the blod on my nail!!

I don't know why the number was high. But it is just one number, so we just consider it a fluke until we see differently.

If you can't get the fatter lancets right away, double poke to make a bigger hole.
