Anyone heard of or have experience with this companies dry cat food for diabetic cats ? https://www.youngagainpetfood.com/10bro ... egory=cats

I have 3 cats Mr Grey the diabetic, and the other two are normal. I'd like to free feed them again all eating the same food but wellness canned food is very expensive to feed 3 cats.

I just came across Young Again Pet Food dry food for diabetic cats. The ingredients and product claims seem very impressive. I wonder if the cost of the 25 lbs bag is worth it to gain back some freedom of free feeding again…

Check it out https://www.youngagainpetfood.com/10bro ... egory=cats

Hi Rick!

There are some people who use that dry food. It came out after punkin had already passed away, so i don't have personal experience with it, but i confess to being skeptical that it's good for diabetic cats. Dr. Lisa, has the site http://www.catinfo.org and she has lots of information there about why canned food is better for all cats, but especially diabetic cats. You can read there about it, but the short version is that diabetic cats tend to be dehydrated, and the natural food of a cat is a mouse, which has the approximate moisture content of canned food. most people add water to canned food to get even more moisture into them. Diabetes is hard on the kidneys, especially when BGs are high, and more water makes things easier on the kidneys.

that's a very loose, layperson's version of the situation - you can read Dr. Lisa's site for the more professional explanation. She is a vet that posts here on FDMB sometimes.

Nice to see Mr Grey having some blue in there - i'm glad you increased his dose this morning. How are you both doing?

Have you tried the large (12.5oz) cans of Wellness? that brings the cost per ounce down a lot as much of the cost is in the packaging. Chewy.com has 12 of the large cans for $23.40. That would be like paying 86¢ for a 5.5oz can.

Hi Rick!
I'll admit it...we tried it. We got a sample first - just request one from their website or facebook page. They liked the sample..then we bought them a bag. They didn't care for it after about 2 days....my kibblehead baby did but the other 7 would eat a bite or two and leave the rest. I didn't notice it really spiking the diabetics but they also didn't eat much of it. We only have 2 kibbleheads left out of 9 and they're eating 3/4ths wet, 1/4th dry now....

Hi all thanks for your replies. I am hip to Dr Lisa I have her food chart printed out :) and read her site before I found this site years ago :)
I am hoping I will find Mr Grey's dose soon.
I have been buying the big cans of Wellness all along and just bought 2 cases from Chewey.com and saved allot of money compared to the pet store I buy it from locally.
As it is now I have to feed the 2 civilians cheap 9 Lives chicken dinner and Mr Grey ONLY gets Wellness, all three used to eat Wellness too much $$$.
Just wish I could free feed them all again pre DX.

I routinely leave the canned food out for 12 hour stints and everyone - civvie and diabetic - is doing fine.

For scarfers, freezing some to eat as it thaws and or using a timed feeder (ex PetSafe 5 seems to work well for folks here) helps manage that.

I've used Young Again at times for my civvies and rely on it for when I'm away from home, and I know at least one FD cat has done well on it. (IMO at least one went OTJ on it but I could be mistaken.) But dry in general isn't good for FD and it's most useful for cats that won't eat canned. Also there's the smell issue - all the people I asked who've used it have had the same experience - cats who eat a lot of it have the most godawful smelling poop. The stench could qualify as a WMD.

There are canned alternatives - Fancy Feast classics for one.

Yes, Fancy Feast classic and Friskies pâté foods are great, and all kitties can eat it. My Jake has been on an all canned diet for a while now and dropped from 6u twice daily to 2u twice daily.

This is great for me, because once I get my own place again I can get Jake a playmate, and they can eat the same food!
