I give Valentin some of his food by force feeding him with a serynge. I do not know how much I should give him each time, I do not know what is too much. He weighs 9.5 pounds, how many calories should he get each day. He eats a renal diet (Hills KD and Royal Canin renal support) because he has renal disease and he is presently in remission from diabete. He does not eat enough by himself and I do not want him to loose weight.

My vet said the volume of a cat's stomach is 20ccs. (20mls)

I'm not able to help with the other information, no knowledge in that area.

When I have had to assist (force) feed my babies, I usually give them about 2 -2 1/2 ml each time, if you give too much in at once you may provoque nausea, and feed him every 2 hrs till I gave him his usual ration. It is also important that you monitor him and make sure he's drinking water if he's not doing it by himself I would give him also 2ml of water every two or 3 hours ( not at the same time as food)

I have syringe fed several of my cats. I got about 90 ml into them over about 1/2 hour. That amount is about 3 ounces. Based on that and since that is bout what my other cats eat themselves, the 30 ml stomach does not seem right

A technician at the vet clinic told me today that I can give 1/4 of a 5.5oz can of KD, which corresponds to about 35ml of food in one of my syringe each time I feed him and he should eat 1 can 1/4 each day, but before today I have given up to 2 syringes of 35ml each (total of 70ml) in the morning, one in the afternoon and one at night.
He seemed ok with 2 syringes of 35ml each in the morning, but I am not so sure anymore if that was too much.

Are you sure about the volume of a cat's stomach being 20mls

That sounds a little small for a cat's stomach. My cans are all measured by weight at 85 grams. I know 1 cc of water weighs one gram and I've had a couple of big cats who could scarf that amount down in one sitting. When I say big I mean in the 25 to 30 pound range. The conversion is 28.375 grams = one ounce in weight.

That's what I was told, rightly or wrongly so. That's what his vet said.

His regimen at the time was:
15 ml a/d slurry
1ml clind/ 1ml h2o chaser
1ml clind/ 1ml h20 chaser
1ml clavamox
Total 20 ml

She said that was a full stomach.

Gastric capacities for cats and dogs are 5 to 10 mL/kg during
food reintroduction, but capacities as high as 45 to 90 mL/kg
have been measured after complete realimentation.

From someone who's OCD is mostly based on math (should never have taken those courses in Excel) in a lot of cases "the average" is a meaningless term. Kobiashi was 30 pounds when we adopted him. Don't get me going apple!

I really don't know about the volume of the stomach but in any case after a few hours it will be empty again and you can give some more food, that's why my vet recommended feeding every 2 hours in little bits, and take as the total amount to be given his regular daily portion, for Babu and one of my cyvies it would be around one and a half 3 oz can (wish they would eat a little bit more) but each kitty is a little bit different some are very good eaters others just eat a little bit and you don´t want to feed him more than he is used to to avoid him feeling bad

I never questioned the 20mls until this thread was started.

I'm not glad to hear someone has to force feed and not meaning to get you started @Noah & me ......AM glad to be learning more to help take care of my cat.

Agreed..... many terms are relative to how they are used. Someone 5 ft 8 inches may feel tall.....ask someone 6 ft 2 inches if the 5'8" person is tall and the answer would probable be no. It's all relative.

Everything's fine here apple. :bighug: "Getting me started" to someone with my kind of OCD just means my grey matter will start vibrating, nothing nasty implied. With our first sugar cat Nigel I think our vet was waiting for the day I would do a Power-Point presentation along with printed pie charts for the staff. That's the kind of nutty OCD I have, just a busy mind. And I never finish things, and sometimes I count red cars, or telephone poles, or green houses... And for God's sake don't ask me about square roots, too late! Arghh!
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :coffee: ;)

I understand.

........canned goods in order by size, height, label forward organized in and aesthetically pleasing visual for when you open the cupboard door.

I do have a general understanding.

Oh no, not that kind of OCD. It's a mess in here but the way my sister lays out magazines on her coffee table you'd think she uses a ruler. I saw a fridge magnet today, "Martha Stewart does not live here". I used to mess with my sister's head by moving things around in her house or in her fridge. That's where the "disorder" in OCD comes from. I can laugh about it but she's in denial.
We still haven't had our snooping discussion yet. Just a quickie; click on anyone's profile then click on their location and Google Maps pops up. I found that one by accident. I think mine just says Earth.
