I wrote this up for acromoms/dads - but really it could be for anyone here on fdmb. I hope this helps some of you who might be wanting to plan a trip with your special friend.

And again I want to thank Carol - whose poem means the world yet to Joe and me. I have 3 copies of it in precious places - 2 where I still can see them everyday - and one with all our camping gear - he still goes with us all the time!

Patti this is so wonderful.

And it brought back many happy memories of traveling and boating with Smokey Josephine, Marbles,
Mr. Kitty and of course Smokey Esq, Gentleman Cat. If we could not take them with us, we just
didn't go.

But...how can you date it 2012 at the top when it's still 2011....

See the August pages in this year's FDMB calender for a picture of Smokey on the boat....top center.

Re: for those who think they can't travel with a diabetic ki

Great info, Patti --- DH and I are going to travel with Tiggy for the first time next week -- it will be an adventure for sure. We're staying in a hotel.

Oh Phoebe - have a wonderful time - wish you were traveling out this way - would love to have you come visit!

This gives me hope. We love to camp but don't feel we can just yet since Moe was just diagnosed last month. Also concerned because he hates traveling. But the only time he travels is to the vet. I'd probably hate traveling too. I have considered taking him camping with us in our trailer. Now it seems like a possibility. THANK YOU!!!

Do you have the trailer at your house.

Put Moe in a carrier and take him out to the trailer while you clean, get ready for a trip or
whatever. Or just take a book with you and sit for a little while while he explores.

We always put the cat(s) in a carrier to move from/to the trailer. Never let them go out the
door on their own or in our arms.

Figure out where you will put a litter box, his food and water dishes.

Next step is to spend the night in your trailer, 'camping' in your own yard. Just a trial
run, you might say.

Re: for those who think they can't travel with a diabetic ki

That is such a sweet poem, it brought tears to my eyes.

We have traveled with Willy a few times since his DX-- he likes to travel as long as he is NOT kept in a carrier in the car. When he was getting used to it, we would put a lavender or "comfort zone" collar on him and it really seemed to calm him down but he doesn't need them anymore.

I wish I would have had that list of supplies the last time. We left in sort of a rush and we forgot his meter (was meant to be packed in my purse so I could check him during the car ride if he seemed off) and some sort of utensil for dishing out food. The meter was pretty obvious, we picked one up on the way to where we were staying. But, we were helping family and staying in a hotel and could NOT get a hold of anything that we could use to dish out food for the first night (we made due but it wasn't pretty). Now I keep some plastic forks and knives in his box because it was totally not an obvious thing to forget!

We have always had trouble with the litterbox situation for travel... some of our family members do not like animals and the litterbox causes tension because of tracked litter, Willy sometimes gets his feet wet (ew), odor, etc. We bought the breeze system and while it's very small (for Willy) it works really well to eliminate most of the issues that people had. In the future, we will pack a container to store the pellets in.

We also pack hypo instructions, a list of all emergency vets, Willy's chart, Willy's current vaccinations and blood test results, and a list of nearby pharmacies in case something arises and we can't get internet or our GPS isn't working. We also pack some of those small honey packets that you get from food places when you order tea so we didn't have to bring his Karo bottle (or some travel sized container of it that could leak). If we do not plan to buy bottled water, I pack a some of our tap water because sometimes big changes in water upset my dog's super sensitive sally stomach.

Depending on where we are going we may also bring our "pet" friendly first aid kit. We keep pet friendly bug spray, sunblock, and medications (for bug bites, ouchies, upset tummies, fever, etc.) as well as some gauze, tape, and the self sticking bandage stuff that they use to cover gauze (I don't know what it's called).

Willy randomly gets car sickness so in the car I pack some plastic bags and wet wipes in case we have an accident.

Thanks Karen. The trailer is at our house. That is what I was thinking of doing. Letting him explore the trailer and possibly a camping trip in our backyard. He loves to go outside when we are hanging out in the backyard. I was thinking about getting him a harness and leash after I see how he does with hanging out in the trailer. So he can explore while we are camping and still be safe. I'm getting excited!

Re: for those who think they can't travel with a diabetic ki

J.D. and I will be flying across the country to California tomorrow morning, for a two week vacation to visit my dad.
J.D. flys with in Sherpa under the seat in front of me.

Re: for those who think they can't travel with a diabetic ki

A harness and leash training is good.

I always keep the harnesses on the kitties when traveling, and during the day in the trailer/camper.
That way, if they make a dash for the door, I have something to grab.

I never let them go in or out the door by themselves. Always carry them through in the
kennel. I don't want them to get the idea it's OK for them to go through that door on their own.

The hardest part is entering the rig when the kitties are already loose inside. They
seem to be 'right there' at the door and you have to be really careful they don't get out
while you're trying to enter.
