Food Suggestions for Chronic Pancreatitis?

Hi All,

Maxie moo moo had his ultrasound yesterday and they found he has pancreatitis again.

Wondering if anyone has experience with the right food for this?

Right now he is eating Hills M/D canned food. I had not made it to the point where I was transitioning to the fancy feast classic canned yet.

He also is Hypercalcemic if that needs to be taken into account.

I don't know if there are any food recommendations for cats with pancreatitis . At times there have been suggestions/theories, but I don't think any of them turned out to work in cats.

Pancreatitis can be really frustrating to try to manage, sigh.

For pancreatitis, the best food is whatever they'll eat! Is he on any pain medication? Pain relief is really important for pancreatitis.

It depends if there is gastroinestinal thickening (as with IBD, seen in ultrasound) and a food intolerance which can cause GI inflammation and trigger the pancreatitis. An internal medicine specialist can usually help a lot more than a regular vet, but with diabetes it becomes more complicated to treat. Boots's symptoms went away with steroids and a hydrolyzed protein diet (hills z/d dry), but now that he is diabetic, he only gets a tiny amount of steroid. I'm transitioning his diet to a low carb hydrolyzed diet from Young Again, and he hasn't had any GI distress or nausea with it. With Boots, pretty much any protein source will trigger an episode of nausea, appetite loss, hiding, etc, and he probably would not be with me today if not for the hydrolyzed food. Not all pancreatitis cats have food intolerance, but it's one of the triggers.

My kitty Buddy has chronic pancreatitis, he is on .75 prednisolone 2 X a day which has helped him a lot. Some will say that it does not matter if the food is high in fat, but with Buddy it does. Buddy, eats Royal Canin GlycoBalance which has helped him lose weight and eating through flares, some will say it is no better than fancy feast, but it is for Buddy. Buddy, has never been regulated because of rises in BG from pancreatitis. In the area where we live there is no internal medicine doc's, the nearest one wants $ 600.00 for an office visit, when I find that is not so far away and does not charge an arm & leg we will be going. With out the prednisolone I have had to force feed Buddy as much as 5 to 6 weeks at a time using Hill'd I/D.
