Hello!

I am currently feeding my 13.5 lb male diabetic kitty fancy feast classics - should I be going by the weight amount on the can? Right now i am doing 1.5 can in morning and 1.5 at night - should I actually be doing 2 in morning and 2 at night?

It says 1 can per 3 lbs... so maybe I am under feeding. Thoughts?

Thank you!
Lisa

The recommendations on the cans are really pretty useless.....they tend to suggest a lot more food than they actually need

The best thing you can do is weigh Nacho once a week.....if he's at a good weight, continue feeding as you have....if he needs to lose or starts gaining unwanted weight, reduce the amount he's getting....and of course if he's underweight or starts losing, increase how much he gets

A lot of us bought a baby scale so we can get pretty accurate weights on our cats like THIS one

Yeah, don't pay too much attention to what the can says. There are so many other factors that go into it like age, breed, metabolism, activity, and just the individual cat's needs. Weighing is the best way to figure it out. I just weigh myself on a bathroom scale holding the cat and subtract my weight. A baby scale would be much more accurate, but it works okay.

Weight is really just a number. So try to figure out if he's lost, gained, or maintained his weight. If needed, call vet and get their last recorded weight. Then figure out if he needs to lose, gain, or stay the same. Body condition scoring is decent for this.
