Food recommendation?

My cat is newly diagnosed and on 1 unit glargine twice daily. His BG is just beginning to come down from the upper 300s. The vet recommends Hills Multi Organ Support food. I have many cats, already several on prescription food, and only so much money to spend. What do you think of this food? Are there others to recommend? I must spend money wisely. TIA

Low carb canned food only. Ignore the vet's food recommendation. Here are the food charts: Links to FOOD CHARTS

A newer US chart: Cat Food As-Fed Chart

Any food under 10% carbs is best for a diabetic cat. You'll find affordable brands like Fancy Feast and Friskies on the charts. Keep some higher carb foods on hand to use in case blood glucose levels drop too low. Syrup works in a pinch for a hypo but the effect doesn't last too long.

A canned food only diet can benefit your other cats, too. Prescription food is poor quality and contain no magic ingredient that helps with any health issue. Feeding Your Cat: Know the Basics of Feline Nutrition – Common Sense. Healthy Cats. goes into the details on proper diet and common health issues caused by a poor diet.

Affording a canned food diet for multiple cats can be tough these days but there are ways to save money. I'm not sure if Friskies still makes the 13 oz can. It was low carb and affordable and worked well for multi cat homes.

For those who must feed some dry, the only suggested "good" dry foods that are ok for diabetics is Dr. Elsey and Young Again.
