Hey y'all! I think our Punkin is in diet induced remission. He's been on Friskies Pate since DX day. Yesterday 1/11/22 was officially 2 weeks OTJ.
He's acting HUNGRY. Despite being fed 3-4 times a day. ( he actually got into a small bag of dehydrated chicken treats and ate the Whole bag overnight the other night) Given his low numbers, my hubby wants to start giving him a small amount of his usual (former) dry food ( Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula). I've been strongly against it, because I don't want him backsliding. But, we're cat sitting for my MILs cat ( Punkin's litter mate) and he got into a bit of her dry food about an hour before test time. He registered at 83 ( Relion)
Would it be safe to do this??? We're still so new to all of this and I am unsure of how to proceed...
 
Congrats on remission!

Short answer - no. Once a diabetic cat, always a diabetic cat, no matter the reason they developed diabetes in the first place. Over time that increased carb load will wear his pancreas out again. A few thefts won't hurt him, but I would not add any regular dry/high carb food back in
 
Thank you. I'm researching the few approved dry foods to see if they might financially be an option. ( we're 1 income right now due to injuries) if we can make any work, well try them.
 
How much of the Friskies are you feeding him in a day? What's his ideal weight? I would avoid dry food, even the low carb ones, but some cats are pretty stubborn. If he's willing to eat wet food, just give him more unless he's overweight.
 
We've had cats fall out of remission with as little as a couple weeks of supplemental dry food when someone was away from vacation. Since Punkin is so recently OTJ, I'd be very cautious about making his pancreas do any extra work right now. His numbers are great right now, don't rock the boat.

He's on Friskies Pate only right now except what he stole today lol. We're splitting a can of Friskies in the morning, 1/6 each bowl around noon and 4, then splitting again in the evening. So 3 cans a day for 3 cats. His numbers have consistently been in the 70s- 80s.
