How much is the recommended amount of food for a cat? I remember reading it somewhere but I cant seem to find it.

I'm trying a new food schedule with Buttons, to try to get her to stop eating dry dog food randomly (weird cat!) and even though she's gained some weight since her diagnoses, I'm pretty sure shes at a healthy weight right now. Before I was feeding her morning and night, either a full small can of Special Kitty or half a big can. I'm wanting to change it so she has her morning and night but something in between considering the wet food I leave out, she either just doesnt touch it or eats it all and is hungry after 2 hours. ohmygod_smile

Thank you!!<3

You may want to invest in a timed auto feeder which most people use. The 5 compartment one by PetSafe is ideal.
It's preferred to spread out the daily food supply throughout the cycle as food will help to level out the BG numbers.

Diabetic cats will need much more food until they are regulated and their bodies are again able to extract what is needed from the foods. As for how much, every cat will be different. One of mine was up to 30oz/day and is down to around 8oz or so; the other was close to 24oz/day and got back down to around 6oz.

Get a scale and periodically weight the kitty. Adjust the amount of food based on the weight and which way the weight should go.

I have a catmate C20 automatic feeder for each of my cats. They get 4 small meals a day (technically breakfast & dinner are bigger meals than the snacks they get int he auto feeder). This feeder pops open and has an ice pack for the bottom. I put a cold portion around an ice cube to open between 10-11am and a frozen portion to open around 3-4 pm. they each get about 6oz or so a day and they each weight 13-14 lbs. Cedric is probably closer to 15 lbs, and he has a tendancy of eating more of the food that Dallas. But it works out pretty well. Cedric went into remission before I rescued Dallas (a former stray).

Thank you! That is really helpful. Did you find your cats could easily figure the autofeeder out and get into the other trays? Thats the only thing I'm worried about.
