Hi and I'm so sorry to ask so many questions!!

So, Mr. Steven is a completely committed, stubborn kitty when it comes to his dry food. He is not obese, but will not eat anything wet except a lick or two from the top of a wet glycobalan e can

I remembered he used to love a wet food, earthborn holistic. It was grain/gluten free and when I look it up it says 3% carbs. 12% protein. How do I tell bif it is appropriate for a) his cancer (hydrolyzed protein, which he loves was reco amended), b) his kidneys, and c) diabetes?

It does have carrageenan (can't remember spelling) which is said to be a cancer risk and he does have cancer. But I see that stuff in the glycobalance I gredient list.

I'd make it myself if I had a recipe but just wondering about trying the EB.

???

Sorry this thread got missed!

All of our cats were dry food addicts when my boy Hendrick was diagnosed. What a struggle. Hendrick had never showed much interest in wet food at all. We tried so many different kinds of food.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer in regards to tell if the food in question is ok for his other conditions. Tagging some of the gurus around here:

@Sienne and Gabby (GA)
@Bandit's Mom

Thanks so much!! This has been so frustrating!!!! I have been trying to "modify" his diet a teeny tiny bit (even getting him to eat more DM than hydrolyzed protein. Trying again with different wet foods). And what happens? A pancreatic flare. So back to his "safe" (for pancreatitis) foods which are are NOT safe for diabetes (HP).

We finally got back on buprenex (IM, not transmucosal) and he is like a new cat. With the flare, withdrawn, turning from food, boneless in my arms, just awful. With buprenex, bright, purring, playing with toys, jumping on to shelves to see out the window, HUNGRY
But...have to drive 80 mi to get that shot and he gets it daily, so we'll see how that goes

I got the Earthborn but very scared to even try at this point. Scared that if it doesnt spike his BG more then it will trigger more pancreatitis.

Which flavor of Earthborn? I looked up one on Chewy.com for phosphorus, carbs, etc. It depends on the flavor. Check the flavor on Chewy and go down to the Questions section where people ask about carb and phosphorus content. Also, for dry food, the Young Again Zero Mature foods appear to be low phosphorus. Check the list that I sent you.

Felinecrf.org is a wonderful resource about all things related to cat kidney disease (and other diseases as well). She has a very extensive list of foods and a wealth of information about nutrition for our cats.

What treatment is he on for intestinal lymphoma? I assume it’s Small Cell Lymphoma?
I wish the vet would let you do Buprenex injections at home. Have you tried oral Buprenorphine administered trans-mucosally — meaning that it must be squirted onto the gums/inner buccal (cheek) pocket for proper absorption because it does not work if ingested — it must be absorbed via gums/skin inside cheek.

Thank you so much! Treatment for his lymphoma, and yes, small cell, is either pred, which he is on, or chlorambucil( a chemo drug/. I gather here that some people do both but his oncologist said no, wanted him to discontinue pred to start the other. He did poorly coming off pred, so I stuck with pred. No big help for the diabetes, sadly.

And yes, have tried the transmucosal which completely zonks him out, so then I can't tell anything about what's going on with him. The IM injections are just awesome for him, feels great, eats, happy cat and yes, I so wish shed let me do at home (I do cerenia, give subq). I guess it's a controlled substance so if I decided to start mainlining my cats pain meds, it would be on her license. Cant blame her for being cautious!! :smuggrin:

You might be more familiar with the "other" name for buprenorphine -- it's Suboxone which is used to help addicts taper off of other opiates. That said, I've never had a vet give me a hard time about at home administration. It's likely the comfort level of the vet especially since bupe does have a street value these days.

One option may be to take a look at ZiwiPeak and Stella & Chewy's. ZiwiPeak has an air dried line of foods and they include novel proteins (e.g., venison). The food looks like jerky treats. Stella & Chewy's has a freeze dried line. They also have novel protein -- rabbit. For the IBD, novel proteins are generally a better choice than a protein your cat has been eating for years.
