On top of having a diabetic kitty, I have a kitty with UR issues. She is on Purina UR dry food. I had checked the carb content on the catinfo.org charts and it looks like it is safe for my sugar kitty 8% carb calories. But I checked, http://binkyspage.tripod.com/dryfood.html, and it shows it off the chart high carbs.

I don't feed my sugar kitty this dry food, but he does get into it if she doesn't eat it all. I figured with the catinfo.org numbers I didn't need to worry. I'm not sure which one is correct.

On a happy note...we seem to be well on our way to management...no numbers over 150 in weeks (started in the 500's). I haven't updated my spreasheet in awhile, need to do that so I can get a visual :-)
 
Glad Honeys doing well! I think the UR on the cat info site is the canned . The dry version is high carb.
 
The dry is too high in carbs and actually, we've seen a lot of cats with urinary tract issues that do even better when they're taking off the "prescription" dry and put on the same low carb canned food that the diabetic eats.

The key to kidney health is water, not some special formula, so the canned food we recommend for Honey could very well be better for your other cat too!

There's absolutely nothing special about "prescription" foods. The word "Prescription" has no legal meaning when it comes to pet foods...It's just been trademarked by the Hills company to make it sound special.
 
Thanks folks. My UR girl has switched over to the same canned as my sugar Honey. He likes a little kibble in the evening, just before bed, I have tried Young Again, but he doesn't like it....and with the info I saw I decided not to worry about the Purina UR. I guess he is going to start getting more canned food for his bedtime snack :-)
 
Yeah i found it helped a lot when I finally got Wilbur off dry food completely, and I was buying expensive cat food, Well for me. $60.00 for a 16 pound bag. (Hills Prescription Diet W/D). it helped getting him off dry food completely. and sved me a bunch of money

I have him now eating Fancy Feast 'classic' Ocean Whitefish and Tuna Feast. At first I had trouble because he'd just lick all the juice and not eat any of it, so i went through a ton of food. Then, on the advice of people here, I started making a soup. I now mix one can of tap water to one can of cat food.

But even then i noticed he'd leave about 25%. if I added too much water he didn't like it. So i wasn't sure whta to do.

Decided one more tool might help. bought a hand mixer on Amazon for about $25.00 and it came with a whisk and a beaker.

The whisk is useless, but the beaker is perfect. I put about 100m/l of water in (one can full) and the food. Hit it for 5 or 6 seconds with the blender and there isn't a bump left in it. it looks like a melted chocolate milkshake, but certainly doesn't smell or taste like one.

now he eats about 90% of the can. It's worked great. the only thing I have to be careful of is mixing it too much. I had no idea how much torque these hand mixers have and how fast they spin. if I do it any longer on low speed than 5 or 6 seconds it will start to froth. and he appears not to be a frothy kind of kitty. :)
 
johnt...the things we will do for our sugar kitties! Not sure if mine would like soup or not. He prefers chunks, and is getting better with the pates. I actually mix in a little Young Again Zero with the pates to give him his chunks, plus he doesn't really like the YA by itself
