Food for Diabetes & Kidney Disease

Hello,

I'm looking for suggestions & am wondering what types of food some of you may be feeding for kitty's that have diabetes & kidney disease. I also belong to a feline kidney group & was given some great low phosphorous low carb options & I've tried a few of them. I've also reviewed the food charts but I was just wondering what you all may be having good luck & good results with. You can never have too many options to try

Take a list of this chart:

• Food list under 10% carbs, under 1% phosphorus (updated mid-2017 by manxcat419)

If you need to go to a higher carb food that your cat will eat, you may have to add a powdered phosphorus binder (the gels that the vets sells contain sugar).

I'm hoping to a avoid the aluminum hydroxide phosphorus binder......it can cause constipation & she already takes Miralax daily which has cured her constipation. There is another new binder called Niacinimide people seem to be having good results with though, so that could be an option.

Hi, if you take a look at Dr. Lisa's list (http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf) look for food under 10% carbs for his diabetes and under 250 in phosphorus ( if you can find one that you can get and he likes under 200 even better), you do need to stay away from the renal diets since almost all are way to high in carbs for diabetic cats ( usually in order to lower the phosphorus they add carbs to the food).

Regarding the phosphorus binders I've used Renvela and it has worked quite ok for us (both on Babu my diabetic cat and on one of my civies) I think is also an alternative if aluminum hydroxide is not an option for you

And even though there isn't much information about Niacinamide there is some information pointing to the fact that on long term use it may cause an increase in blood sugar levels so you will have to monitor her closely
