Hi everyone,

Since Moritz seems to be getting bored just eating EVO 95% Chicken and Turkey everyday, I'm trying to add some variety to his diet so I can rotate. He's OTJ and has borderline kidney values (so I need a high quality protein and low phosphorous food). I picked up some Blue Wilderness Duck and Wellness Turkey after looking at his list here:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Uu8g1 ... 4NThk/edit

It looks like these are values from 2010, so they may not be up to date?

In Hobo's list, some of the Blue Wilderness recipes are listed as "Old 2010?" in the Date of Update column, but then underneath that, also in the Date of Update column, a date of 5/10/2012 is given (for example, for Blue Wilderness Duck):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... xYmc#gid=0

I'm not sure if that means that the information for Blue Wilderness Duck is out of date or not. Perhaps someone here knows?

Finally, wherever it says "as fed", I assume this is a value that has been obtained directly from the food manufacturer and not just the values noted on the can (since they're often maximum or minimum values and thus not necessarily accurate)? In other words, is "as fed" a true value and different from the Guaranteed Analysis (which seems to usually just be maximums and minimums)?

For example, again in this chart:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Uu8g1 ... 4NThk/edit

The "as fed" moisture for Blue Wilderness Duck is listed as 78%, and on the can I have it's listed as 78% maximum. So I'm not sure if the moisture content truly is 78% or just 78% maximum.

Finally (for now, sorry so many questions!), also in this chart: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Uu8g1 ... 4NThk/edit under Castor and Pollux Organix, the %Moisture As fed, for example, are listed as "max" values. I suppose that means that the manufacturer was unwilling to provide "as fed" values?

I hope this is all clear! Thanks so much!

Elena:

On Hobo's Guide, I've added ingredients to the SS so we can all compare in case ingredients change over time. Because ingredients are easier to obtain than the nutritional values, each row of entries has its own "updated date". So, the ingredients may have been updated very recently, but the nutritional values may be old.

Hope that helps!

Elena:

I know when I started hunting for low-carbed food for Pumbaa, I was rejecting a lot of it because it would have ingredients like sweet potatoes and rice and other carbs listed, and the nutritional value charts out there had old data. I assumed that the manufacturers had started adding carbs as cheap filler to reduce production costs, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that even with those ingredients, most of the foods that have had their nutritional values updated were still under the 10% KCal from carbs that we strive for. That's why I added the ingredients, and you are welcome for that! :)

The chart you linked to, Pet Food Nutritional Values, was done by Wayne for his cat, Hobo in 2010. Since I was emailing pet food manufacturers to get updated values, I contacted Wayne and asked if he would mind if I updated his chart, and we named the update "Hobo's Guide" in honor of Wayne's GA Hobo. And "Hobo's Guide" is now a community project, with other FDMB members giving me updated as-fed nutritional values when they receive them, and me adding them to the chart when I have time.

If you scroll down through Hobo's Guide, you'll see that some cells are in the same pink as the "date of update" header. If a nutritional value has changed since the last chart the food appeared on, I'm trying to highlight it in that pink so people will know exactly what changed.

Phosphorus values do frequently change over time, unlike the carb content in foods, so you are right to want to be vigilant about making sure they're current! What you can do is compare the values on the 2010 or Hobo's list to Tanya's CRF canned list: http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm. There is a column that tells you when the values were last checked. They're listed in dry matter weight instead of mg/100kcal, so anything less than 1% on that list is going to be ok to feed. If something isn't on either list, you can always call the manufacturer and obtain the as-fed values, then post them here so they can be added to hobo's list.

Two suggestions I know are current because I very recently double checked the as-fed values with the manufacturer are the low phos Merrick's flavors (because that's what I feed Bandit), and the low phos Wellness flavors (a friend of mine with a CKD cat feeds this and confirmed them recently).
