Does anyone have experience with their diabetic kitty on fluoxetine (prozac)? Our sweet Jett has been on a low dose of fluoxetine for 5 years for severe over-grooming issues (belly and arm). Since Jett's diabetes diagnosis on July 6th, I have been researching various issues that cause diabetes, such as stress-induced, pancreatitis, diffusing essential oils, etc. I have been researching every day anything and everything to try and connect what put Jett in this situation. He had blood work in Feb (see SS) and an ultrasound in April with no issues identified.
The disappointing and alarming part is that I presented Jett to the vet on July 5th with a specific communication that I had been trying to wean Jett off the fluoxetine, since he was sleeping a lot and my concern with seratonin syndrome. The vet dismissed my concern that the high BG was due to the fluoxetine weaning and said that it wouldn't have an impact.
Well, today I am continuing my research and the connection between fluoxetine and blood sugar is communicated any many medical publications on the internet. I am stunned beyond words. I can't believe that 1) I put him in this state and 2) my vet didn't say to get him back on the fluoxetine to regulate his blood sugar. Instead, she just administers the insulin and fructosamine tests and hundreds of dollars of vet exams/visits and diabetes supplies. Here is the quote from the fda.gov site regarding side effects of fluoxetine:
I sent this information to my vet. I have no idea what to do. I asked her in the email if putting him back on fluoxetine would regulate his BG. As you can see from his SS, his #s are all over the place. I'm scared to put him in a hypo situation, so I'm somewhat paralyzed by this information. Frankly, I would much rather have him on a low dose of Fluoxetine with normal BG than on insulin twice a day with crazy BG #s that can't be regulated.
