Fluffy is sick

Fluffy has not eaten much in two days. There was not much urine in the litter box and he has still been drinking a lot. He will eat a few treats but will not eat boiled chicken, dry food or canned food. His levels have not changed much. He just lays down all the time and hardly moves. He does not seem to be hurting but he really looks as skinny and weak. I think he has given up and is tried of being sick. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Fluufy is sick

I would get him to the vet asap. He may be in pain which will affect his eating. He may have a UTI. This could be something that may need some simple medication to help him feel better. I would let the vet check him out.

Re: Fluufy is sick

I'm so sorry to hear that Fluffy is sick. I agree with the others about getting him to the vet as soon as you can. Hopefully, it's just something minor, but it's not good for diabetic kitties to not be eating. Paws crossed Fluffy feels better soon.

Re: Fluufy is sick

I agree going to the vet is probably the best thing. Since Fluffy isn't peeing, you can't test for ketones at home (unless you have a precision xtra meter). I'd worry about ketones being elevated, especially since he isn't eating. Can you syringe some water into his mouth, and maybe try to syringe some watered down food too?

Re: Fluufy is sick

If you can afford it, its very important to see the vet as soon as possible. The longer his condition goes untreated, the harder it might be to correct.

I took Fluffy to the vet this morning and you were right. He has a UTI. His urine level was 1000, low grade fever. Vet gave him a antibodic shot and medicine for me to give him. He said I need to get better control of his levels. Wants me to up his dose by .25. Thanks for your help.

Re: Fluufy is sick

What was the antibiotic? Did the vet test the urine to determine which antibiotic was appropriate? If it was covenia, please note that there have been documented issues with this antibiotic. Also, was he tested for ketones?

Regarding his dose, what kind of numbers has he been getting?

Re: Fluufy is sick

Good for you! If your cat received a covenia antibiotic shot and your vet did not warn you of what the potential side effects are, then you'll probably want to read up on them and watch your cat carefully. Some cats do have problems with the shots, but many do not. If you cat has already received covenia, then arm yourself now with the knowledge of what to watch for.

Fluffy needs to eat. If he won't eat his normal food, tempt him with treats. But one way or another, he needs calories now. Infection plus high glucose levels and not much food can lead to DKA.

Re: Fluufy is sick

If you received the convenia shot you need to research its effect on UTIs. My cat Kitty had a UTI last week and was adminitered a Convenia shot by one of the vets in the practice I use. I was told immediately by my regular vet that convenia was not normally effective in controlling a UTI. My cat was switched to Zeniquin and I was reimbursed for the $55 shot.

I also surfed the web and tended to agree that convenia was not the drug of choice for UTIs.

Please research yourself, but this was my experience.

Re: Fluufy is sick

The culture and sensitivity (C &S) test could not have been performed since it takes a couple of days to perform the test.

My question s ow di he vet determine there was a UTI. Was bacteria found in a sterile sample? Just finding blood is insufficient in determining a UTI.

The antiboiotic is Cefa-drop or Cefadroxil 1 ML daily. He did not tell me what was in the urine. I can call him back and ask. I do not think he did a ketone test.I am getting the vet to fax me over a copy of the urine test and will let you know what it says.

Re: Fluufy is sick

Not that you hope your kitty is sick, but glad it is just a UTI. Hope Fluffy feels better soon. Feel free to post on the PZI forum if you'd like any thoughts/help with dosing. It's a small but friendly group. By Fluffy's spreadsheet, looks like you were able to test a couple mid-cycle #'s as well as pre shots and those seem to indicate you have some room to be more aggressive. Long way of saying, I think you're vet is right about increasing the dose.

Re: Fluufy is sick

Rose,

I would post your lab results in a new topic and ask specifically for help with lab results. We have several people who are good at that, but they may not see your post at the end of this thread. And be patient. They may be on later tonight.
