Fluffy - found a new vet, first dose, Ketostix in Toronto?

Based on the experience of a board member (thank you, thank you, thank you!!) we found a new clinic and the staff there are wonderful! They were thorough, patient, knowledgeable and kind.

Fluffy's pre-shot BG was 17.1 (sorry, still need to familiarize myself with the terminology) and I've just administered his first 1IU of glargine. Now for a night of watching and testing and more reading.

Thanks, everyone for your words of support and advice! You've all made this process so much easier.

Just as an aside, I've been to 3 pharmacies (Shoppers, Walmart and PharmaPlus) and none of them had ketostix. Does anyone know if they're back ordered up here in Canada?

Glad to see that everything is slowly falling into place!! Now is when all the fun begins :)

Just a head's up, here on the board people are more familiar with the US BG units - mg/dL .... which is simple to covert from our numbers - just multiply by 18!

you could try contacting the company that makes them - here is a link to Bayer Canada

As far I know it is stocked up here, I do know sometimes it isn't in stock when I check in to any given pharmacy, and they usually don't have very many in stock - check with any pharmacist, they should be able to order it for you.

They should have the Ketostix. It's possible they are carrying Keto Diastix instead. These will measure both urine ketones and urine glucose. (Make sure you don't get Diastix, which measure urine glucose only).

I got my Ketostix at Shoppers, i had to ask the pharmacy because they are behind the counter.

Fluffy's +3 value is 184 (10.2mmol/L). SHould the lantus be working this quickly?
I'm in the process of setting up this spreadsheet - having momentary troubles with the link in my profile, but I'll get it figured out.

Re the spreadsheet. Go back to your copy. (be sure you bookmark that URL or put it in your Favorits). Go over to the LH side and choose File. Then choose publish to the web. You'll get an URL in the box below. That's the URL you want to put in your signature.

When i first started my Annie on Lantus, she had a drop like that as well. It's good though! i wish my Annie would see more blues and greens!

you have lots of support here on fdmb, and tons of resources to help you through the process.

Thanks for this. I was worried his +6 reading was going to be super low but it's not too different than his +3 reading (+3 - 184 [10.2mmol/L]; +6.5 - 160 [8.9mmol/L]). I think doing a curve in a week is going to be really informative.
