Flaxseed and carbs?

So, question for you all. I've been using Pure Bites freeze dried treats, since they're 100% freeze dried meat. However, I'd like to start giving Tink glucosamine for his hips, which were weakening before he was diagnosed. His weight is back up and his overall body condition has greatly improved, but his hips are still weak and in "old man" condition. I've had other cats go through this at his age and glucosamine helped a lot.

So, my question is... I have a bag of Happy Hips, which consists of dehydrated chicken, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamin e and flaxseed. I do see that the current version of this does NOT contain flaxseed (this bag is on the old side, but smells fine). I'm curious if the flaxseed will cause this to have carbs or not... and if so, how will I know if the amount is low enough to still give him. I think flaxseed is 2nd from last ingredient, as listed on the bag. I did give him some last night, before I thought about the whole flaxseed issue, and his numbers were a little high this morning... but I can't say with any certainty that this is the cause as his morning numbers always seem to do whatever they want for no apparent reason.

Appreciate any insight. Guess my best bet is to just go buy a new bag, without flaxseed... but I'd like to use this one up if I can.

Oh, duh... guess I could have done that. LOL I'm usually the "Google queen"! :)

Curious why his numbers are higher in the mornings again... we've been doing good with his timed feedings. They're still within "normal" I guess (sure wish the chart showed green up to 120 - I see a lot of blues and start to worry... but most are 100-110).

If this continues I might try switching to Weruva for his nighttime feeding, since it's even lower in carbs than the Wellness. I think I might try to do a curve on Sunday too... see what we're hitting throughout the day with the timed feedings.

Just an FYI - protein and fats can be broken down into carbohydrates, plus some amines, oxygen, and water.

Neuropathy and Glucosamine - formerly Re: Flaxseed and carbs

Lost track of this post. Very interesting article. I'm reluctant to believe the "clinical evidence" that glucosamine does not do what it says. I have had two different cats show SIGNIFICANT improvement in their ability to propel with their back legs after just a few weeks of glucosamine supplemtent. Still... the concern about it's possible effect on diabetes is enough to make me shelf the idea in regards to Tink.

Oddly enough, he can run like a speed-demon through the house. It's just the jumping and balancing in which you can tell he's got some neuropathy in the back end. Has anyone else found anything that helps to either rebuild muscle mass in the hip region or to help with old joints? I'm not sure which is actually the issue. Tink's weight is good (maybe too good... now keeping an eye out to prevent him from gaining any more), but he still has "old man" hips. The rest of his body is solid and strong, but the hips still feel thin and are weak when he tries to jump, even just onto a chair. He frequently jumps half way and "climbs" the rest, pulling himself up with his front legs. Of course this isn't great for the furniture...

If he lost a lot of weight before being diagnosed, part of that was probably muscle loss. He may just need to rebuild the muscle over time.

What a coincidence,Bailey has been on Cosyquin for arthritis for the past year,I was about to order more when I saw a post yesterday saying there was conflicting opinions as to the effect on the bg of diabetic cats taking glucosamine supplements.
Since Bailey was diagnosed a year ago he also has lost muscle tone in his back legs, and has really shrunken hips and legs.
Does anyone know of alternative remedy for arthritis that won't interfere with blood glucose, seems almost like everything I put him on has adverse affect. Diane

I gave my guys coseqiun for a while. It didn't impact their BG at all ( i have 2 diabetic cats). however I have read and spoken to my vet who says glucosamine doesn't help arthritis. However my parents swear by it so I use it anyway. Doesn't do any harm.
