flashing ketones!

Hi all, i stayed home with Alex Olivia today to do another glucose curve, she just flashed 'ketones' - WHAT SHOULD I DO?
otherwise she seems the same.......her updated spreadsheet should be attached.....thank you!
 
What meter were you using when it flashed? Were you testing her glucose, or testing her ketones via blood?

More than likely it is a setting on your glucose meter that is meant to remind humans to test for ketones when their glucose gets to that level. Not really something to worry about, since it cannot test for ketones at the same time. Are you testing her urine for ketones occasionally?
 
it's the Up and Up meter from Target......I have not been testing her urine.....

today I let her have dry Evo in between her wet feedings......her numbers are higher than normal, perhaps I inadvertantly threw things off ; (
she's also really fighting some watery eyes......she was on Clavamox and that didn't do anything, she is on day 8 or Clindamycin which helped her raspy breathing in her nose, but her eyes are still watery......poor little girl.....
 
This is from a human glucometer site: The ketone alert is a built-in function of most meters. It simply means that you blood glucose to high enough that you MIGHT be passing ketones in your urine.

Your numbers are okay and if she is eating and seems well, you should be fine. To ease your mind, you could go get some ketostix from the drug store (the kind the human diabetics use) and test her urine. That will give you a definitive answer.

In the meantime, I would pull the dry food and give her some watered down wet food to get some more liquid into her.
 
shew, THANKS! she gave me a heart attack.....meanwhile she's acting the same as always - maybe that is why she was giving me the 'what's the problem' look.......I'll get some Wellness CORE/water into her right now....
 
I watered down some food and offered it to her, she sniffed it and tried to cover it up like 'waste'.....I gave her some more that was not watered down and she's happily eating that :-D
 
yeah, she loved the plain wet food, when I give her more later this evening I will add a bit of water.....THANKS for your help Sue - things were peaceful all day and then all heck started breaking loose in the house @-)

Have you tried giving her lysine? Usually comes in a 500 mg tablet or capsule, give half in the morning and the other half at night mixed in her food. Helped a lot when Tigger had his URI. Poor little girl is right. :(
 
Hi Pamela, I've been mixing lysine into her food morning and evening for a couple of weeks now.......whatever the bug, it's persistent! Her 'husband' Donovan got rid of his sneezing (mostly) and raspy breathing too, but has a gooey eye now......I wipe their eyes, give them Clindamycin BID and give them lysine.......I spoke with someone at the shelter the other day (where they were for over two weeks) and she said everything going out of there now (cats and dogs) is having URI issues.......I wish I could take their watery eyes :cry:

Okay, I remember now you mentioning that before. I wonder if her and Donovan are just passing it back and forth to each other and that is why it is so hard to get rid of?

You said before you have them together in a separate room in your house? So you are treating them both so hopefully it will eventually pass. Maybe others have some suggestions here. URI's get really hard to deal with especially if their nose gets plugged up and they can't smell so then they don't eat. I am glad that doesn't seem to be the case here.

They are lucky to have you for their foster mommy. :)

P.S. looks like she is doing quite well on the levemir too!
 
yeah, they could be passing it back and forth - although I have them both on meds to wipe it out together......sometimes these things need to run their course....I will keep my eye on them over the next few days and start a separate post if they just don't seem to be kicking it.....

they are definitely eating and in really good, happy spirits - she just looks pathetic ; (
 
Getting back to ketones....Thank God this was a false alarm for you. It might still be a good idea to get the urine test strips so you coud test for ketones. As you can see from my sinature, my cat has had DKA twice. The second time he had DKA is BG was only 240. Although ketones usually occur over 300, I have one of the exceptions to the rule. DKA is something I hope nobody has to deal with.
