flaming high #'s question

I don't see any ramp up time for Lev. I stopped giving insulin to Kiki on Saturday, wasn't sure if all the fur loss and the drama at shot time was an allergy to insulin. On Tuesday the vet said to start again. She got insulin twice yesterday, numbers were in the 300s, this mornings preshot was 190. I'd start the Lev, if you're more comfortable starting at 1/2U than 1U do that.

When drawing a small amount, I'm sure you already know this, but what we do is when we pull the syringe from the wrapper I pull up the plunger first to break the seal the stopper might have already with the barrel. Then push the plunger back down. Insert into the pen, I draw a little over the desired amount and then using the plunger like a screw I push down and turn the plunger in circles as I do, it helps prevent the air bubbles. Wish I could tell you who on the PZI group posted that, but she was right, I haven't had to deal with air bubbles since I starting circling the plunger downward.

but i thought jen that i could not push any insulin back into pen or vial??? i'm getting different opinions on this, or maybe i'm just confused. probably the latter.

I don't post on the ISGs so I don't know the current school of thought, what I know is simply from using Lev myself. I don't use the pens all the way to the end, Tucker's dose has been .5U BID, it would take months to use that up. When I think he's been too high for a while I assume my pen is bad and I start a fresh one.

Now that I have two on Lev with Kiki's adoption, I will know if it's the Lev that went bad or if one cat is simply needed a dose adjustment.

I chose Lev in the first place because a couple of years ago there was no talk of not shooting Lev back into the vial or pen. As an ex PZI user for years I was used to having to inject air into vials, then weeks later having to bleed that air out of the vial, I was also used to dropping things, well not used to it, just prone to it  Lev is sturdier, from what I read originally.

I've always drawn a little over the dose I need and injected it back into the pen. Whether that has been the reason that I don't use up the entire pen or not, I don't know, but since the pen lasts me for months, I assume it's okay.

That is a rule for Lantus. I learned that years ago from Martha and Alley, long before there were ISGs.

I always have pushed back with Levemir and I know others who also have. I have never had the "push back" or "28 day" problems with Levemir. That's why I chose it over Lantus more than 4 years ago.

But if you want to be extra safe, follow those Lantus rules for Lev.

Hi Nicole, Tom seems to be doing well. Most of the time if I had not known the #'s he was running I would have always thought he was well.
But 2 days in now with the ab's and I think he seems more alert and active.
We will start Lev either tomorow morning or Sat. morning.
Excited to begin.
Kind of not wanting to mix two variables, ab's and new insulin together but will likely do so sooner rather than later.

Thank you all for your help and encouragement with tom and making this switch. I don't want any PZ user's to feel this is a poor reflection on PZ. Tom is sick and we just needed to do something different before disaster struck. Like him becoming REALLY sick from continual highs.

Thanks Jenn for making the pen so darn easy to use!!

This is great news, very happy for you & Tom. I will look forward to seeing your posts in Lantus Land too
