Kahlua has IBD as well as diabetes. The vet put her on Flagyl because she had tons of bacteria in her poop and she didn't want to put her on steroids. She's been taking the Flagyl for over a month now. The diarrhea is gone and she no longer has bacteria in her poop. I've been giving her S. Boulardii every day, too. The last couple weeks her blood sugar has started shooting up. She's gone from 0.5 units to 1 unit and still she shoots up. The vet thinks she's probably ready to come off insulin because she's bouncing. Crazy....not happening. The last couple days, Kahlua has started leaving behind food. That's unheard of for her. She is always hungry. Ravenous. Last night she had some diarrhea and threw up several times. She clearly felt yucky. We could hear her tumy rolling around. Could it be the Flagyl? Why would she need to stay on it if her poop is clear? I've been reading on the IBD group that Flagyl is bad for IBD cats.....thoughts?

Long term flagyl is not good as it can cause neurological problems. When my cats were on it it was never more than 10/ days and sooner once the stool was normal. If the bacteria is gone it sounds like the diarrhea is from the IBD now? I am sorry she’s not feeling well.:bighug:

Flagyl is not a long term solution for IBD. How was she diagnosed for IBD and how long ago? A good probiotic for IBD is Visbiome. It might help restore the tummy flora.

For diabetics, budesonide might be a better solution. It's a steroid but acts mostly on the GI system. When Neko was put on budesonide, it didn't impact her blood sugars. Though I see it has for a few diabetics. ECID.

She was diagnosed by her symptoms and the amount of bacteria in her poop. That was a month ago. I had just had an ultrasound done on my other cat and there's no way my husband would okay one for Kahlua, too. I've stopped the Flagyl and have ordered the Healthy Gut. Kahlua has been on S. Boulardii since we got her last year. It didn't help her diarrhea at all. The Flagyl did. I've switched all my cats to raw since then. I'm hoping everyone will do much better now. The vet said Kahlua's stomach is not distended anymore and there's no bacteria in her poop. We are still trying to get some urine but she's empty every time we go in.

IBD is not diagnosed by symptoms or bacteria, it can be confused with small cell lymphoma unless a biopsy is done. Hopefully a novel protein diet will help and may lean to IBD as a problem.

Has Kahului ever had her B12 levels tested? A large number of cats with GI issues have B12 deficiency. She might need B12 shots . S. Boulardii will not work if B12 is low. https://www.ibdkitties.net/supplements/probiotics/

I dont see b12 listed on her bloodwork. Do they call it something else?

Cobalamin, often run together with a test for folate. It is a separate test, sometimes as part of a GI panel.
I don't see it on her results. I think I'll see how things go now that she's off Flagyl. The Healthy Gut will be here Saturday, so I'll start that then. She needs to have bloodwork done soon so I'll ask about adding that on. Her urine was fine, so no UTI. I still no idea why her numbers have shot up.
