Hi there

My vet gave me a supplement to help with Gem's skin/coat condition. It is DermaPet, says it's "a source of Omega-3 fatty acids plus Vitamin E" and you pump it on the food. Problem is Gem won't touch it!

What are any of you guys using as a fish oil/Omega 3 supplement?

Thanks!

Did you start with just a little bit at first? Many cats resist sudden food (flavor) changes.

You might pick up some fish oil gel caps, poke a hole in the end and squeeze a drop out on a plate, or mix with food.
(If she doesn't like it, you could use them yourself.)

Maybe take a look at the raw food recipe at Cat Info to see what Dr Pierson uses to provide those elements.

Thanks, I am going to do more research into this. I don't know how much it will really help her, I think we really have to wait to see if her Cushing's meds improve things, but I figure it can't hurt :)

Omega 3 fatty acids are supposed to help with inflammation ... though with elevated cortisol levels, I'm not sure how much they could help.

These are needed for good hair and skin, in humans too. If you get human grade supplements, you can use them if Gem won't. Gem may lick them off you.

Hmmnn ... maybe find unflavored cod liver oil gel caps; some cats like those better.

I guess I will try a bunch of different ones and see which she takes to.

I know, it's unlikely to help much, but I think it's one of those things where at least I can feel like I'm doing something, know what I mean?

Other than that, we start the increased dose of trilostane, and then wait and see.

HI, if your cat is okay with taking pills you could try giving a people fish oil capsule. Its in a gelcap so there is no taste - I take the capsule, slime it in baby food and pop it in Sitkas mouth. She tastes the food and down it goes - no muss no fuss. The other thing to try is salmon oil - you can buy it in capsule or liquid form. Since its fish that may be more inviting to your kitty. Jan

Thanks. Due to multiple issues, I don't think I can pill Gem, wouldn't even want to try. She gets all her meds in chewable form in pill pockets, or sprinkled in her food. I will give the liquid fish oils a try and see if she likes them. She's never been a fish eater, unlike my civvie who will eat anything :)
